Microsoft OneNote and Youtube Video Ideas. Nokia Lumia 800 Demo

December 30th, 2011 ? Mark Guim ? Filed Under

I?ve been hunting down great apps at the Windows Phone Marketplace, but recently discovered one that?s already pre-installed. I?m talking about OneNote, which is part of Microsoft Office for Windows Phone. I?ve been using it to write down video ideas for our Youtube channel. Since it is stored in the cloud, I can see or edit the same note on the Nokia Lumia 800, my Macbook, or even the iPhone.

You can also watch this video in HD on Youtube. Subscribe to the channel to preview the latest videos before they get published on the blog.

You can take new notes and open existing OneNote notebooks right on your phone. Your notes can help you remember things like what happened in that meeting at work or what you need to pick up at the grocery store on the way home.

What do you use to take notes on your phone?

A massive fire engulfed a Russian nuclear submarine at an Arctic shipyard Thursday, but there has been no radiation leak, or injuries, officials said. The fire at the Yekaterinburg nuclear submarine occurred while it was in dock for repairs at the Roslyakovo shipyard. The Yekaterinburg is a Delta-IV-class nuclear-powered submarine that normally carries 16 nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles. Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov told The Associated Press that all weapons had been unloaded from the sub and its reactor had been shutdown to safety before the repairs. MOSCOW (AP) ? Firefighters extinguished a massive fire aboard a docked Russian nuclear submarine Friday as some crew members remained inside, officials said, giving assurances that there was no radiation leak and the vessel's nuclear-tipped missiles were not on board.

Military prosecutors have launched an investigation into whether safety regulations were breached. President Dmitry Medvedev summoned top Cabinet officials to report on the situation and demanded punishment for anyone found responsible.

The fire broke out Thursday at an Arctic shipyard outside the northwestern Russian city of Murmansk where the submarine Yekaterinburg was in dry-dock. The blaze, which shot orange flames high into the air through the night, was put out Friday afternoon and firefighters continued to spray the vessel with water to cool it down, Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu said.

Russian state television earlier showed the rubber-coated hull of the submarine still smoldering, with firefighters gathering around it and some standing on top to douse it with water. Most modern submarines' outer hulls are covered with rubber to make them less noisy and more difficult for an enemy to detect.

Seven members of the submarine crew were hospitalized after inhaling poisonous carbon monoxide fumes from the fire, Shoigu said.

An unspecified number of crew remained inside the submarine during the fire, Defense Ministry spokesman Col. Igor Konashenkov said in a statement. He insisted there never was any danger of it spreading inside the sub and said the crew reported that conditions on board remained normal.

Konashenkov's statement left it unclear whether the crew were trapped there or ordered to stay inside.

There has been no radiation leak from the fire, the Defense Ministry and Foreign Ministry said, and Norway's Radiation Protection Authority across the border reported it has not measured any increased radioactivity.

The governor in Finnmark, Norway's northeastern province that borders Russia, and the radiation agency complained about the Russian response.

"There have been problems to get clear information from the Russian side," Gunnar Kjoennoey told Norwegian broadcaster NRK. "We have an agreement to exchange information in such cases, but there has been no information from the Russian side so far."

Russia's military says the blaze started on wooden scaffolding and then engulfed the sub's outer hull. The vessel's nuclear reactor had been shut down and its nuclear-tipped missiles and other weapons had been unloaded before dry-dock repairs, it said.

Toxic fumes from the blaze had spread to the town of Roslyakovo where the shipyard is located, but officials said there was no need to evacuate local residents.

The Interfax new agency quoted the former director of the biggest shipyard in the area as saying the fire was probably caused by the failure to take proper safety precautions, such as coating the scaffolding with special sprays to make it fire-resistant.

"It was either lack of professionalism or an attempt to save money that has turned into huge losses," Nikolai Kalistratov said.

The Yekaterinburg is a Delta-IV-class nuclear-powered submarine that normally carries 16 nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles. The 166-meter (548-feet) vessel has a displacement of 18,200 tons when submerged.

The chief of the General Staff of the Russian armed forces, Gen. Nikolai Makarov, led a team of senior military officials to Roslyakovo to oversee the emergency response.

The damage from the fire could be so massive that the submarine would need to be scrapped, the Interfax news agency reported Friday. But Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who is in charge of the nation's military industries, said that the submarine will rejoin the navy after repairs.

The Russian navy suffered its worst accident in August 2000, when the Kursk nuclear submarine exploded and sank during naval maneuvers, killing all 118 crew members aboard.

A 2008 accident at the Nerpa nuclear-powered submarine killed 20 Russian seamen and injured 21 others when its fire-extinguishing system activated in error and spewed suffocating Freon gas.

Nigeria fears more Church attacks likely

odmnigeria-thumb.jpg

Nigeria (MNN) ? The Islamist group Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for a number of sophisticated attacks. The group has strong links to al-Qaeda and has been growing quickly in the nine years since its inception.?

Jerry Dykstra, spokesman for Open Doors USA, says, "We've known that the situation in Nigeria has deteriorated this past year." Recent attacks prove they're intent on making good their threats to push for a caliphate (a government established in Islam) in Nigeria.

This year, bomb attacks ripped through three churches in central Nigeria on Christmas Day, killing over two dozen people. Investigators say the blast at one house of worship near the capital city, Abuja, struck as the service was ending and worshippers were filing out.?

On Christmas Eve last year, a series of bomb blasts around Jos killed 32 people and wounded more than 70 others. ?

What's disconcerting about the attacks is that they're showing the militants have gone from sporadic bursts to planning designed to create the most fear and chaos among Christians.?? Dykstra explains, "As a result of them being more organized, we've seen more frequent attacks, (that has been underreported, I believe)? and more coordinated, more sophisticated and even going into the South."

Nigerian leaders have been openly criticized by opponents for their slow response to the growing security threats. Dykstra notes that the picture emerging bears a chilling resemblance to Iraq's remnant church. "According to people living in the country, the response of the government has been too slow. It looks like what happened in Iraq, where the churches were attacked, and the government did not protect any of those churches. Christians in Iraq fled."

Boko Haram's attacks risk reopening old wounds between the mostly-Muslim north and largely-Christian south. Church leaders in the most vulnerable areas are afraid they're being left to fend for themselves, a conclusion that Dykstra thinks will take the form of more violence against believers in 2012.

The terror they've created and their connection with al-Qaeda seems to have emboldened the Boko Haram. "What they want is really Sharia law all across Nigeria, and they want some of their members released from jail. I think it does not bode well for next year because there could be a civil war in Nigeria, and that could have tremendous repercussions."

Civil war would mean a significant disruption for church planters and others doing Gospel work. Pray for their partners. "Nigeria is such a key country for Christians throughout all of Africa. They send out hundreds of thousands of missionaries," Dykstra notes, adding that regardless of what happens in the days ahead, "Open Doors is involved with supporting Christians in crisis situations like this, giving holistic community development, also distributing Bibles and training up leaders."

Egypt: Reaping Legal Victories as the Revolution Continues ? Global ...

This post is part of our special coverage Egypt Revolution 2011.

About ten days ago, the Egyptian military forcefully pushed away the protesters demonstrating outside the Egyptian cabinet. More than 15 people were killed and another 300 people were injured. The videos showing men in military uniform savagely beating protesters and beating and undressing a woman brought the Egyptians esteem and hope for the future of their revolution to its lowest point.

However in the past two days, the Egyptian revolution achieved two new victories but this time in the halls of courts of justice and away from Tahrir Square, the epicentre of the Egyptian revolution in downtown Cairo.

Among those victories is the release of Egyptian blogger Alaa Abdelfattah, who had been detained for 56 days. And the importance of Alaa's case comes from the fact that he refused to be interrogated by the Military Prosecutor, in protest against the legitimacy of Military Trials for Civilians. He was later transferred to Civil Court and yesterday Alaa was released but pending investigations as Wael Abbas highlighted in his tweet:

@waelabbas: Egyptian blogger Alaa Seif is free pending investigations

As soon as he was free, Alaa paid Tahrir Square a visit, and Mohamed Abd El-Hamid reported the sentiments in the Square then.

@MohAbdElHamid: #Tahrir is happy that @alaa is back and cars were honking in support. #AlaaIsFree

Alaa with Khaled Said Mother

Alaa is not the first blogger to refuse to submit to a military court, he was preceded by blogger Maikel Nabil Sanad who was arrested in March. However the importance of Alaa's case comes due to his both local and international fame and charismatic character.

Adham El-Deeb summarizes in the following tweet the importance of Alaa's release despite the fact that he hasn't been declared innocent of the charges against him, which include inciting violence against the military, stealing a weapon and destroying military equipment during the October 9 Maspero massacre, in which 25 Egyptians, mostly Copts, were killed in clashes between the military poilce and protesters demanding answers for the burning of churches in Sohag and Aswan.

@Adham_Eldeeb: ?????? ???? - ?? ???? ???? - ?????? ?????? ????????

@Adham_Eldeeb: Alaa's freedom - in my opinion - is a victory for the will of the revolution.

One day later, the revolution scored another victory, this time by Samira Ibrahim. Samira (@SamiraIbrahim4) is one of the 18 girls who were arrested during the March protests in Tahrir Square to have virginity tests administered on them, and has since filed a lawsuit against the Egyptian military for sexual assault. The military initially denied that the virginity tests took place, however the court ruled today that the virginity tests on women in the custody of the military is illegal. The importance of the verdict is that it confirms that the assaults actually took place.

@sallyzohney: Case approved and they admit the #VirginityTests against the girls :) road is long though #NoSCAF #SupportSamira

On the other hand, the court has made any further similar assaults illegal.

@nellyali: Forced virginity testing is now officially ILLEGAL in #Egypt! Thank you, #SamiraIbrahim #SupportSamira

Egyptian writer Ibrahim Farghali saluted Samira's courage, especially in a society that makes it hard for a woman to admit being a victim to such assault, let alone file a lawsuit.

@IbrahimFarghali: The Beauty made the Victory over the Beast.. YES WE CAN

Finally, during a TV interview he made few hours after his release. Alaa pointed out that the revolution isn't just the demonstrations in Tahrir Square, but it's also about strikes, elections and legal victories.

@MeeMMaa: ????: ?? ?????? ???? ???? ????? ??????????? ???????? ??????? ?????? ???????? ????? ???????? ????? ???? ??? ???? ??????? ?????

@MeeMMaa: Alaa: There are different paths to go in such as elections, courts, general strikes and the protests in the square. And we shouldn't only focus on one path in order not to repel people away and loose them.

Egyptians are reclaiming their rights, one battle at a time. Stay tuned for more coverage from Egypt as the Egyptian revolution continues.

Anything Boys Can Do...

Image: Illustration by Thomas Fuchs

When then Harvard University president Lawrence Summers suggested in 2005 that innate differences between men and women may account for the lack of women in top science and engineering positions (and subsequently resigned), he was referring to the greater male variability hypothesis. Women, it holds, are on average as mathematically competent as men, but there is a greater innate spread in math ability among men. In other words, a higher proportion of men stumble mathematically, but an equally high proportion excel because of something in the way male brains develop. This supposedly explained why boys tend to dominate math competitions and why men far outnumber women in elite university math departments. Since then, scientists have put the variability hypothesis to the test, and it comes up short.

In the most ambitious study so far, mathematics professor Jonathan Kane of the University of Wisconsin?Whitewater and oncology professor Janet Mertz of the University of Wisconsin?Madison analyzed data on math performance from 52 countries, including scores from elite competitions such as the International Mathematical Olympiad. In particular, they examined variance?roughly, how spread out scores are. Two patterns emerged, they report in a paper in the January issue of the Notices of the American Mathematical Society. The first is that males? and females? variance is essentially equal in some countries. The other is that the ratio of males? to females? variance differs greatly from one country to another. These ranged from 0.91 to 1.52 (where a ratio of 1 means the two sexes? variance is equal, and a number greater than 1 means males? scores were more spread out than women?s).

The finding that males? variance exceeds females? in some countries but is less than females? in others and that both range ?all over the place suggests it can?t be biologically innate, unless you want to say that human genetics is different in different countries,? Mertz argues. ?The vast majority of the differences between male and female performance must reflect social and cultural factors.?

Such as? One clue comes from the finding that a widely used measure of a nation?s gender equality, called the Global Gender Gap Index, correlates with the ratio of boys versus girls scoring in the top 5 percent on an international math competition called PISA. In some countries, such as the Czech Republic, the boys? and girls? distribution of math scores were nearly identical. Another clue that gender differences in math performance are not innate comes from the shrinking gender gap. In the U.S., the ratio of boys to girls scoring above 700 on the math SAT fell from 13:1 in the 1970s to 3:1 in the 1990s.

Psychology professor Stephen Ceci of Cornell University calls the new analysis ?a very important argument? in the debate over the sources of sex differences in math careers. But, he adds, the findings do not mean that biology plays no role. Just because diet affects human height, for instance, does not mean ?that nature is unimportant.? Now that the greater male variability hypothesis has fallen short, nature is not looking as important as scientists once thought.

Holiday calendar: Peace over Earth

Alan Boyle writes

Woes may weigh heavy on the world at ground level, but from 22,000 miles up, even the strongest storm is a mere swirl of white on our beautiful blue planet.

This is a view of Earth on Christmas morning, blending archival imagery of Earth's surface from the MODIS instruments on NASA's Aqua and Terra satellites with hot-off-the-spacecraft weather data from NOAA's GOES-East satellite. You can see clouds streaming over the southeastern U.S. That's the storm front that brought a white Christmas to the Southwest; now it's bringing a soggy holiday to a region from Texas to Georgia. (For updates on the weather in your area and around the globe, check out msnbc.com's Weather section as well as the Weather Channel's website.)

NASA assembles the GOES-on-MODIS imagery automatically on a 24/7 basis and posts regular updates to its GOES Project Science website. You can even watch an animation that tracks weather systems as they sweep around the globe.

The world looks so peaceful from orbital heights. In fact, there's a name for the positive change in perspective that comes over astronauts when they see Earth from far above: the Overview Effect. Here's how the effect is described by the Overview Institute:

"It refers to the experience of seeing firsthand the reality of the Earth in space, which is immediately understood to be a tiny, fragile ball of life, hanging in the void, shielded and nourished by a paper-thin atmosphere. From space, the astronauts tell us, national boundaries vanish, the conflicts that divide us become less important and the need to create a planetary society with the united will to protect this 'pale blue dot' becomes both obvious and imperative. Even more so, many of them tell us that from the Overview perspective, all of this seems imminently achievable, if only more people could have the experience!"

We wish you all the best for the holiday season and the new year. Here's hoping that over the past 25 days, the Cosmic Log Space Advent Calendar has given you fresh perspectives on the world, a renewed sense of wonder ... and maybe even a little taste of the Overview Effect.

Speaking Of Christmas Miracles? This Guy Can Fly (Almost)

WingsIf you could have one superpower, what would it be? Mind control would be my answer (I hope to be an evil genius when I grow up). But it seems the most popular answer to that question is the ability to fly. Jarnos Smeets, a mechanical engineer from the Netherlands, is working really hard to make that a reality. How, you ask? Well, he's building real-life wings (just like the wings on a bird). By first combining the accelerometers of the WiiMote and an HTC Wildfire S, he can now measure the arm-speed of his own movements and thus control the outrunner motors on his DIY wings.

Was the Star of Bethlehem a Star, Comet ... or Miracle? (SPACE.com)

As a young boy, one of my highlights of the Christmas season was visiting New York's Hayden Planetarium where they would stage their traditional sky show in which astronomers pondered the age-old question of the possible origin of the Star of Bethlehem.?

Between 1935 and 1959, Hayden's very first Zeiss projector (three others have been installed since) was run back some 2,000 years in an attempt to reproduce the positions of the planets around the time of the birth of Christ. The entire procedure would take four hours with the planets engaged in an incredible fast-moving dance while the moon flipped around the sky a hundred times a minute!?

Ultimately, the projector was brought to a halt on Feb. 25 in the year 6 BC with the planets Jupiter, Saturn and Mars forming a triangle low in the western sky.

In those days, a silhouette of the skyline of New York was a permanent fixture around the periphery of the planetarium dome, so the planet trio was depicted not above a Middle East desert, but Midtown Manhattan. The audience was then asked: "Was the star seen by the Wise Men an unusual, eye-catching gathering of naked eye planets, or was that fabled 'sign in the sky' a meteor, comet, nova, or something supernatural?"

In later years, the tedious running-back of the projector was discontinued, mainly to save needless wear and tear on the machinery. In 1960, special auxiliary projectors were designed to depict the planet triangle. And the panorama silhouette of New York skyscrapers was replaced by a series of projectors which could replicate not just the skyline of New York, but scenes from any location on Earth. As such, Hayden audiences could now watch as Jupiter, Saturn and Mars drew near to each other over the landscape of Bethlehem. ??

But there are many other contributing factors to this age-old story, including the uncertainty in the actual date of Christ's birth and the terminology used to describe celestial events during the Star's appearance some 20 centuries ago. For instance, any heavenly object bright enough to attract attention was apt to be called a "star." Meteors, for instance, were "shooting" or "falling" stars; comets were "hairy" stars; novas were "new" stars and planets were "wandering" stars. [Space Christmas: Festive Photos of Cosmic Beauty]

Trying to fix a date

The Bible says nothing about the calendar date of the Nativity, but does refer to historical personages and events, such as the reign of King Herod. Modern historical research suggests that Herod may have died sometime between 4 B.C. and 1 B.C. by our present calendar. The Magi are said to have visited Herod just before he died and presumably the birth of Christ and the first appearance of the fabled Star came sometime before that.

And it is very doubtful that Jesus was born in late December.?

For one thing, the oft-quoted Biblical passage in St. Luke: "And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night" indicates that spring is the likely season; that was when the shepherds in Judea were tending the newborn lambs.?

In ancient times, Dec. ?25 was the date of the lavish Roman festival of Saturnalia. It was a time when gifts were exchanged; homes, streets and buildings were decorated; people came home for the holidays and everybody was in a happy, party mood.?

It has been said that early Christians chose the date of the Saturnalia in order to avoid attention and thus escape persecution. When the Roman emperor Constantine officially adopted Christianity in the 4th century, the date of Christmas remained Dec. 25.

And Christ's birth almost certainly did not occur 2,011 years ago. Our present chronology by which the years are numbered as AD or BC was conceived by the Roman abbot Dionysius Exiguus around 523 A.D. Unfortunately, Dionysius made two significant errors in his calculations.?

The first was his placement of 1 A.D. immediately following 1 B.C., completely disregarding the mathematically required 0 in between. Back then in Europe, zero was not considered a number. So, for instance, the year we now call 3 B.C., is actually ?2 numerically speaking.

Second, Dionysius accepted the statement of Clement of Alexandria that Jesus was born in the 28th year of the reign of the Roman emperor Caesar Augustus. But Dionysius failed to realize that during the first four years of his reign this Roman ruler was known by his original name Octavianus, until the Roman senate proclaimed him as "Augustus."

So here alone we have an error of four years, but by the time it was realized our chronology was too well entrenched to be changed.

As for the time for the appearance of the Star, most astronomers and Biblical scholars believe that it most likely occurred sometime between the years 7 and 2 B.C. So this is the time frame that we need to explore to determine if there was anything unusual in the sky that might have caught the attention of the Magi.

What might the star have been?

At least four theories have been advanced to explain the Star of Bethlehem from a purely astronomical viewpoint.

Possibly the first idea put forward was that it was an unusually bright fireball meteor seen streaking toward the horizon. But as any sky watcher knows from experience, such an object can be seen to flash across the sky in a mere matter of seconds ? hardly long enough to lead the Magi halfway across the Orient to the little town of Bethlehem. So we can confidently lay this concept to rest.

Not so easily dismissed, however, is the possibility that the Star was a bright comet. Such objects can remain visible to the unaided eye for weeks either in the predawn sky or at dusk. Surely it is not impossible to conceive that a comet with a bright star-like head and long gossamer tail pointing like some cosmic finger toward the horizon could have drawn the Magi to Bethlehem.

The famous Halley's Comet, last seen in early 1986, flared in the sky during August and September in the year 11 BC. However, most authorities dismiss it due to the poor time fit. Although it seems unlikely that another Great Comet could have appeared nearer to the accepted time frame of the Star's appearance and went unrecorded, we can never really be sure.?

Besides, comets were viewed as omens of evil, such as floods and famine as well as the death ? not the birth ? of kings and monarchs. The Romans, in marking the death of the Roman General Agrippa, for example, used the 11 B.C. apparition of Halley's Comet as a benchmark. With this in mind, comets would seem to be wrong as the heavenly sign that would signal the coming of a newborn king.

Perhaps the simplest answer is a nova or supernova outburst: A new star blazes forth where none had ever been seen and leaves no trace for us to find in the future. Although their names imply a new creation, these spectacular objects are in reality dying stars, although they are new (albeit temporary) additions to the nighttime sky. [Amazing Supernova Photos]

The appearance of a nova is unpredictable ? a really bright one becomes visible perhaps once every 20 years or so. Going on this assumption, we're due for a bright naked-eye nova at almost any time now, since the most recent one appeared in August 1975 not far from the bright star Deneb in the constellation Cygnus.?

Most bright novas suddenly and unexpectedly flare into prominence literally overnight, attracting the instant attention of sky-conscious people. But after several days or weeks of such prominence, it gradually fades back to obscurity. ??

Even more spectacular ? but much rarer ? are supernovae; stars that suddenly blow themselves completely apart, briefly producing an incredible energy output equivalent to the combined light of an entire galaxy of stars!?

At the height of its outburst, a supernova can shine with a brilliance capable of casting shadows and can even be seen in broad daylight ? truly a celestial announcement worthy of the birth of a king. In our Milky Way galaxy, over the past thousand years, there have been four brilliant supernovas, in 1006, 1054, 1572 and 1604.

Clearly, we are long overdue for another.?

Although a nova or supernova is the most satisfying explanation for the Star, there is a serious problem with it, in that there doesn't seem to be any definitive record of a bright nova appearing in the sky during the time that biblical historians believe the Magi made their journey. One nova apparently did appear, bordering the constellations Capricornus and Aquarius during the spring of 5 B.C. But the Chinese records, which describe this object, imply that it was apparently not very conspicuous at all. ? ?

Planet peregrinations?

The final possibility is one or more of the bright naked-eye planets. The likelihood that the Magi could have confused one or more of the familiar planets with a star seems remote. However, sometimes two or more of these restless wanderers come together in a striking conjunction.?

Perhaps a planetary grouping of particular beauty; an exceptionally close conjunction of two planets or groupings of three or more creating an eye-catching geometric figure in the sky may have taken place between the years 7 and 2 B.C. Such a gathering would be quite unusual to say the least.?

One such event that we've already mentioned occurred in 6 B.C. involving Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, and happened in the constellation of Pisces, the Fishes.

Yet another possible explanation for the Star of Bethlehem is the three-times passing of Jupiter and Saturn between May and December in 7 BC; a rare triple or "great conjunction." Jupiter appeared to pass one degree north of Saturn on May 29; practically the same on Sept. 30; then finally a third time on Dec. 5.?

There is no doubt about the visibility of these events, mostly opposite to the sun in nighttime skies. As for their astrological impact, the Magi would have certainly noticed that both planets did not appear to separate widely between their conjunctions. In fact, for eight consecutive months ? the time it might have taken to travel the 500 miles or more from Babylonia to Judea ? Jupiter and Saturn remained within three degrees of each other, from late April of 7 B.C. until early January of 6 B.C.

But perhaps no other planetary grouping can equal that of the two brightest planets ? Venus and Jupiter ? for the explanation that we seek.? And if we take the only known account of the Star given in St. Matthew, then what we really need is the appearance of not just one, but two "stars." The first appearance would have been seen well in advance of the Magi?s arrival in Bethlehem, and the other at the end of their long journey.?

Maybe the signal for their star was to be a sign in the constellation of Leo, the Lion.?

To the early Israelites, Leo was a constellation of great astrological significance and considered a sacred part of the sky. A very close conjunction of Venus and Jupiter would have been visible in the eastern dawn sky of the Middle East on August 12, 3 B.C.

When they first emerged above the eastern horizon, the two planets were separated by only about two-fifths of the moon's apparent diameter or 12 minutes of arc. As a comparison, the separation of the stars Mizar and Alcor in the handle of the Big Dipper is also 12 arc minutes.?

Planets this close can be very striking, if they don't differ too much in brightness. Incidentally, this sign would have been both seen "in the east" by Persian men "in the East," explaining the ambiguous phrase in St. Matthew.

Venus ultimately vanished into the glare of the sun, but Jupiter and Leo remained in the night sky during the next ten months. During this time a number of additional planetary conjunctions took place, all of which would have been of great importance to the priest-astrologers of the time.?

Sometime during the spring of 2 B.C. the Magi might have had their audience with King Herod, who questioned them diligently as to what they had seen and when. Obviously Herod and his advisers missed out on seeing the "star" for themselves (but then again, it appeared at around 4 or 5 a.m. when likely the only thing they were watching were the inside of their eyelids!). Herod sent the Magi on their way to search for the Christ child.

Then, during June of 2 B.C., as Jupiter and the stars of Leo began to sink into the western evening twilight, Venus again returned to this same region of the sky for an even more spectacular encore. The Magi certainly would have especially taken note that on the evening of June 17, Jupiter and Venus appeared even closer together than they did in the dawn skies of the previous August. [Photos of Venus]

As the planets slowly descended toward the horizon they got closer and closer together. Finally, at 8:30 p.m. local time they drew to within a mere 0.6 of an arc minute of each other while appearing in the western twilight sky.

To the Magi the two brightest planets must have appeared to coalesce into one and glowed before them like a dazzling beacon over Judea. Eyeglasses were many centuries in the future, so only people with perfect eyes would have seen the planets separated.

Astronomy can tell us that all these planetary conjunctions indeed occurred. But whether anyone actually observed them, and if any of these sent the Magi on their historic journey, are all matters for conjecture.

A supernatural occurrence?

And finally, was the Star of Bethlehem a miracle star??

Hubert?J. Bernhard, who for many years was a lecturer at San Francisco's Morrison Planetarium?made a series of four LP record albums in 1967, trying to educate and popularize astronomy. They were called "The Planetarium Lecture Series" and one of his topics dealt with the Star of Bethlehem. Near the end of his lecture Bernhard placed this discussion into perspective when he said:

"If you accept the story told in the Bible as the literal truth, then the Christmas Star could not have been a natural apparition. Its movement in the sky and its ability to stand above and mark a single building; these would indicate that it was not a normal phenomenon, but a supernatural sign. One given from on high and one that science will never be able to explain."

Indeed, perhaps this is a mystery that modern science can never truly unravel. Astronomy has taken us as far as it can go. The final decision is yours, alone.?

Joe Rao serves as an instructor and guest lecturer at New York's Hayden Planetarium. He writes about astronomy for The New York Times and other publications, and he is also an on-camera meteorologist for News 12 Westchester, New York.

Swimming around the statues

Catherine Brahic, environment editor

rexfeatures_1137559v.jpg(Image: Jason deCaires Taylor/Rex Features

Artist Jason deCaires Taylor makes artificial reefs from cement casts of real people

What are you trying to convey with your underwater statues?
My work highlights the critical time we're living in, where we can influence the direction of our environment. I use sculpture to portray humans living in symbiosis with nature; to show how there is a sustainable future. But I'm also trying to show the negative impact we have, so some pieces highlight apathy and failure to act, or even to realise how bad the situation is.

Has your outlook changed?
I began with a very optimistic message: I was building this vast community of people working with the environment. Now, I've moved to the darker side. I created a guy sitting on a sofa with a hamburger, watching television, oblivious to his surroundings. That is a futuristic outlook, where we have ignored all the warnings and are sitting underwater but still fixated on something else.

What inspired these sculptures?
I was living in Grenada, in the Caribbean, where coral reefs were suffering as a result of tourism, and I was thinking of making installations but was conscious that I was just creating more objects. Then I thought of making artificial reefs. There was just one bay for snorkelling in Grenada and the impact was significant: you could see corals being kicked and broken, and anchors going directly down on the reef. The idea was to create a new attraction to draw people away. A lot of conservation is about leaving things alone. That's one of the biggest aims of the sculptures.

Can you describe the experience of swimming around the statues?
You're much more drawn in to your environment when you're underwater. You're forced into that world: having to breathe using compressed air or through a snorkel gives you a stronger connection to where you are and what you're doing. I feel more at peace there. The sculptures have a stronger impact underwater. Things change so quickly, they look ancient after six months.

Is photography an important part of your work?
Yes, because nothing stays the same. If I don't capture it at the right stage, two weeks later it'll be completely different. We've seen dramatic changes - and not always good ones - on The Silent Evolution, a work with 400 figures off the coast of Mexico, near Canc?n.

The area was a desolate sandy bed two years ago. I put the sculptures down in August 2010, and for six months it was incredible. Thousands of fish were migrating there, all sorts of crustaceans, hundreds of lobsters and lots of coralline algae were growing. And then, around March this year, the water temperature changed and algal blooms wiped out all that development. That has caused a lot of discussion among biologists over whether this is part of the process or a more serious underlying problem.

So, was it a natural event?
Opinions are divided. It's hard to get a definite answer out of scientists as to what may be causing it. We had had a particularly warm summer but I also think there are serious issues with water treatment facilities in Canc?n.

There's a giant lagoon on the inside of the hotel zone. The water quality is some of worst in the world - in some areas it's basically human waste - and that ends up going out to the reef. To protect the sculptures and make it easier to visit them, we put them where there wasn't so much current or wave action. But the downside is that they don't get a clean flow of open water in front of them.

What are you hoping to do with these sculptures next?
We're doing a new piece with a US marine biologist. I made casts of the ears of each child in a school class and turned them into a sculpture called The Listener. A group of biologists will fit a hydrophone inside it to analyse reef sounds and explore how to monitor reefs using audio only.

Locations in San Diego to Watch the 2010 Leonid Meteor Shower (ContributorNetwork)

The November Leonid Meteor Shower is expected to peak on November 17 and 18. Traditionally, it has produced great shows with rates in the thousands per hour. Best viewed after the moon has set or approximately 4 a.m., San Diego County offers several viewing sights for this annual event.

Mt. Soledad

Located at 6905 La Jolla Scenic Drive South, in beautiful La Jolla, Mt. Soledad is a premiere location to view the night sky 365 days a year. This provides optimal viewing of the annual Leonid Meteor shower for those who do not wish to drive a great distance from the city of San Diego. Mt. Soledad's website offers great driving directions from every direction in San Diego County.

Mt Helix

Located in East County, Mt. Helix is 30 minutes from downtown San Diego in La Mesa. This beautiful park is a non-smoking environment and offers plenty of area for visitors to lay out a blanket or set up chairs to watch the night sky light up. Their website offers great directions from every part of San Diego County.

Borrego Springs

Located two hours east of San Diego, Borrego Springs is one of the darkest places in San Diego County to view the night sky 365 days a year. This is the premier location to view the annual Leonid meteor shower, as there are no bright city lights for miles around. Helpful tip is to stay in your vehicle or in an enclosure where you can still view the dark sky as Borrego Spring is home to many nocturnal creatures such as scorpions, and tarantulas.

Driving there is best during the day or early dusk, as the mountain regions are not well lit and can pose danger to those that are unfamiliar with this desert region. Google Maps offers updated directions from every region of San Diego County.

Tips for best viewing experience

Position yourself to where the horizon is in your field of view. This will provide the stars and showers to grab your attention. Look for the Little Dipper; this will insure it is dark enough for your viewing. Layback and enjoy the annual show. A telescope or binoculars are not necessary. Just the human eye.

(AP) ? The New Jersey Nets will be without center and leading scorer Brook Lopez for a couple of months because of a broken right foot.

Lopez, who did not miss a game in his first three seasons, was injured during an exhibition game against the Knicks on Wednesday and he will have surgery Friday.

The injury is a stress fracture to the slow-healing fifth metatarsal, the same kind of injury that New York Giants first-round draft pick Prince Amukamara suffered on Aug. 6 in training camp. He did not play in a game until Nov. 20.

"I had a long talk with Brook last night," coach Avery Johnson said. "He is not in great spirits but we tried to lift his spirits to let him know that, hey, this is a little bit of a setback but he could definitely have a big-time comeback. Hopefully, once we get through with the surgery and get back to rehabbing and he can heal up and we can get him back at some point this season."

Lopez, who averaged 20.4 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists last season as the Nets posted a 24-58 record, played in the second half with the injury.

Johan Petro is his backup, although the injury might force general manager Billy King to explore some trade options.

The Nets would not say how long Lopez will be sidelined but a medical expert said it would be from six to 12 weeks, but it has the potential of being longer, depending on the degree of the stress fracture.

Dr. Victor Khabie, the chief of the department of surgery and sports medicine at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco, N.Y., told The Associated Press the problem with injuries to the fifth metatarsal is that the blood supply to that area is poor, which prevents doctors from simply putting the foot in a cast.

"For that reason and especially with an athlete you want to get back as soon as possible, we end up doing surgery, which is inserting a metal screw intro the bone to compress the bone together," Khabie said. "The act of inserting the screw also stimulates blood flow to the area."

Khabie said that Lopez's size may increase his recovery time.

"Biomechanics are such that with a bigger guy, the more pressure you put on it, the bone has to be more solid," Khabie said. "It may not make a difference in the healing, but it needs to be more fully healed before you let a 7-footer start jumping up and down on it."

While he has not seen Lopez's X-rays, Khabie felt 12 weeks would be his best guess at a recovery.

"I think that would be early," he added. "If I saw him as a patient, I would say: 'Listen, hopefully, we'll get you back in three months.' I would say that would be a very optimistic type of call. This could be season-ending, potentially, seeing how short the (NBA) season is."

The lockout-shortened season opens this weekend and the regular season concludes at the end of April. The trade deadline is mid-March, which is important to note.

The injury could hurt the Nets' chances of making a deal for Orlando All-Star center Dwight Howard. The Nets and Magic had some talks about a deal after the lockout ended and 23-year-old Lopez was said to be part of the package the Nets offered.

If he can't play, there probably is no deal.

Gilbert Melendez holds onto Strikeforce belt with decision win

Gilbert Melendez holds onto Strikeforce belt with decision win

Gilbert Melendez defended the Strikeforce men's lightweight belt with a methodical decision over Jorge Masvidal in the main event for Strikeforce on Saturday night. On the judges' cards, the champ took it 50-45, 50-45, 49-46.

As the two were feeling each other out in the opening round, Masvidal opened his arms and invited Melendez to hit him, so Melendez obliged and stung Masvidal with straight punches. Masvidal stayed light on his feet, and kicked Melendez's leg out from underneath him. Melendez quickly returned to his feet. Near the end of the round, Melendez caught Masvidal in a front headlock and landed knees to finish the round well.

Masvidal continued to talk smack to Melendez in the second round, and Melendez continued to have an edge in striking. Melendez stayed light on his feet and shook Masvidal with several strikes. Masvidal was unable to find a rhythm or cause any damage.

The third round started with Masvidal thwarting a Melendez takedown attempt. Masvidal threw a knee and knocked out Melendez's mouthpiece and continued to talk smack. Every time Masvidal opened his mouth, Melendez landed a punch. Masvidal appeared to be more comfortable in the third round and was able to create more offense, but still not enough to disrupt Melendez.

Melendez moved forward and landed several unanswered punches in the fourth round. He continued to stay light on his feet and move in to land jabs. In the final minute, Melendez started using a one-two combination effectively.

Masvidal used a knee to try to get inside early in the fifth and final round, but again was unable to create any damage. Melendez stayed calm, kept moving, and used combinations to control the rhythm of the last round. Sensing urgency, Masvidal unloaded in the final minute. He tried for a takedown and to take Melendez's back, but it was too little to make a difference.

After the win, Melendez was asked about his future, and he said he wants a challenge from the UFC.

"I'm proud to be a part of Strikeforce, but they've got to bring over some guys to challenge me. I want to take the UFC champ, whoever it is. Come in my hexagon and let's fight," Melendez said.

He won his last six fights, earning a record of 20-2. Masvidal is now 22-7.

Sprint says it is disabling Carrier IQ software

By Suzanne Choney

This story was updated at 11:25 am PT Dec. 17

Sprint, under fire along with AT&T and T-Mobile for using Carrier IQ's controversial key-logging software, says it is "disabling the use" of software from customers' phones.?

"We have weighed customer concerns and we have disabled use of the tool so that diagnostic information and data is no longer being collected," said Sprint spokeswoman Stephanie Vinge in a statement. "We are further evaluating options regarding this diagnostic software as well as Sprint?s diagnostic needs."

Carrier IQ

Carrier IQ, which says its software is used only to help with network diagnostics, has been under fire for several weeks after an independent researcher discovered the software can track the activities of phone users, including text messages.

The company, whose software is on 141 million cellphones around the country, has said that is not the case, that its software "does not record, store or transmit the contents of SMS (text) messages, email, photographs, audio or video. For example, we understand whether an SMS was sent accurately, but do not record or transmit the content of the SMS. We know which applications are draining your battery, but do not capture the screen."

The use of the software has already resulted in some lawsuits over alleged violation of federal wiretap laws and government attention on privacy violations. On Dec. 2, Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., asked the Federal Trade Commission to investigate Carrier IQ for violating the privacy rights of millions of mobile phone users. Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., who is chairman of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology and the Law, also has similar concerns. He has asked for more detailed information about Carrier IQ's software from the company, as well as from Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile. Verizon Wireless says it does not use Carrier IQ software.

In response to Franken's request for information, Sprint said in a Dec. 14 letter that it has used Carrier IQ's software since 2006, and that it was on 26 million Sprint devices.

"However, the Carrier IQ software tool does not collect any information unless it is 'tasked' to do so by Sprint," the company said in the letter." At any one time, only 1.3 million devices may be tasked to collect and report data. In fact, for any particular research request, a subset of a much smaller number of devices, approximately 30,000, are queried to respond to a research request from Sprint personnel."

Earlier this week, a Carrier IQ executive told the Associated Press that the FBI previously approached the company about using its technology, but was turned away. The disclosure came a day after FBI Director Robert Mueller told Congress that agents "neither sought nor obtained any information" from Carrier IQ.

A national class action lawsuit has been filed in connection with software on at least 140 million smart phones. Many experts claim the software, manufactured by Carrier IQ, tracks and stores the data of a user's activity. NBC's Pete Williams reports.

Historic visit to Libya by Pentagon chief Panetta (AP)

TRIPOLI, Libya ? U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said "the torch of freedom" has passed to the Libyan people and he pledged during a historic visit Saturday to Tripoli that the United States will do all it can to help the country move toward democracy.

But he and his Libyan hosts acknowledged the threat of Islamic militants gaining ground in this period of political uncertainty following the ouster and death of longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

Panetta and Libyan leaders identified challenges for the government now forming, including how to gain control of the militias that overthrew Gadhafi during an eight-month civil war.

"This will be a long and difficult transition, but I have confidence that you will succeed in realizing the dream of a representative government," Panetta said during a news conference with Prime Minister Abdurrahim el-Keib.

"The torch of freedom that has passed throughout the centuries and now passes from nation to nation in the Middle East and North Africa burns brightly here in Libya. May it light your way to a future of peace, prosperity and freedom," Panetta said.

While his visit was brief, Panetta made history as the first U.S. Pentagon chief to set foot on Libyan soil.

He evoked U.S. history, too, with a visit to the cemetery presumed to hold remains of U.S. sailors killed in Tripoli harbor in 1804. Their deaths were memorialized in the famous "shores of Tripoli" line in the Marine Corps hymn.

Both Panetta and al-Keeb expressed confidence that the fledgling government will be able to reach out to the militias and bring them together.

"We know how serious this issue is," said al-Keeb, "We realize it is not matter of saying `OK, put down your arms, go back to work or do what you want to do.' We realize that there are lots of things that we need to be organized."

More broadly, Panetta said the revolts across the region represent a quest for sovereignty by the people, but they will all involve different approaches and challenges.

During meetings with the Libyan leaders, Panetta expressed concern about al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb militants gaining a foothold amid the chaos of an unfolding democracy. But they told him that the Libyan people will reject the terrorist group, said a senior defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions were private.

Panetta's motorcade from the airport into the city provided views of the nation's violent past and future promise ? lush orange groves, carcasses of bombed buildings and charred and graffiti-covered compound once occupied by Gadhafi. Flying from rooftops were the green, black and red flags, adorned with a star and a crescent, belonging to the new government.

At one point, amid the graffiti splashed across the walls of Gadhafi's former compound was a short comment in English: "Thanx US/UK."

The visit also put the man who has led much of the U.S. terrorism fight over the past several years at the scene of one of the first American wars on terror, more than two centuries ago.

Panetta went to what historians believe is the gravesite of as many as 13 U.S. sailors killed in 1804, when the Navy ship Intrepid exploded while slipping into Tripoli harbor to attack pirate ships that had captured an American frigate.

As the story goes, governments along the Barbary coast had turned to state-sponsored piracy to raise money, attacking and taking over merchant ships, enslaving their crews and stealing their bounties. Unwilling to pay fees to protect its ships, the U.S. sent the Navy frigate Philadelphia to the region but it ran aground just off Tripoli and was captured.

President Thomas Jefferson sent a team to get the Philadelphia back or destroy it. Under cover of darkness, the Intrepid sailed into the harbor, killed about 25 pirates and burned the Philadelphia.

A few months later, Jefferson sent the Intrepid back to destroy as many of the pirate ships as possible. The plan was to pack the ketch with explosives, sail into the harbor and blow her up.

The 13 sailors never got to their destination. The ship exploded prematurely killing all aboard and the next day bodies washed ashore. They were buried outside Tripoli, but in 1949 the remains were moved to The Protestant Cemetery by the Libyan government.

On Saturday, Panetta walked into the small walled cemetery and slowly made his way to a corner where five large but simple white gravestones mark the graves of the American sailors. Markers on four of the stones read, "Here lies an American sailor who gave his life in the explosion of the United States Ship Intrepid in Tripoli Harbour, Sept. 4, 1804."

Panetta placed a wreath at the site and, after a moment of silence, placed one of his U.S. secretary of defense souvenir coins on top of one of the stones.

New life was breathed into the long-ago tale by Congress this year. Lawmakers, prodded by descendants of the sailors, added provisions to the defense bill ordering the Pentagon to study the feasibility of exhuming the bodies and bringing them home to America.

In a statement, Panetta said the recent effort to restore the cemetery is "a symbol of the values we share."

Officials said that Panetta made no specific offers of assistance to the Libyan leaders, and he told reporters that there was no discussion of providing military equipment or weapons.

"They have to determine what their needs are and what kind of assistance is required," he said. "And whatever they need, the United States will be happy to respond."

Ahead of Panetta's visit, the Obama administration announced it had lifted penalties that were imposed on Libya in February to choke off Gadhafi's financial resources while his government was using violence to suppress peaceful protests.

The U.S. at the time blocked some $37 billion in Libyan assets, and a White House statement said Friday's action "unfreezes all government and central bank funds within U.S. jurisdiction, with limited exceptions."

"Super movie queue" bookmarking system launches (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Netflix ... Amazon Instant Video ... iTunes ... SnagFilms ... Redbox ... Movies on Demand ... VUDU ...

With so many movie queues, a new bookmarking system is letting users streamline them.

The patent-pending Watch It button is created by Plexus Entertainment, which develops products and strategies in an effort to help connect films and filmmakers with audiences.

Watch It launched in beta form Thursday. It was unveiled on GoWatchIt.com and will be available on TheWrap.com in January.

With the "super movie queue," users can locate, bookmark, track, filter, sort and watch their movie picks across multiple digital-distribution platforms, as well as theaters, DVD and Blu-ray.

Watch It users can request and receive email alerts when movies of interest become available on different platforms, whether it be the theater, a digital service or another platform. The button, which can be embedded in movie reviews and blogs, lets users click and see where a film is available.

Through the button, full movies or trailers can be viewed immediately or placed in a queue for future viewing.

Watch It also allows users to share their queues with their Facebook friends.

The company plans to use Watch It to provide movie marketers with analytics by mining and aggregating non-personally identifiable consumer data.

Plexus Entertainment is planning to broaden the Watch It concept to include music, TV, books, and video games online and offline.

Our special ceremony was held at one of the most gorgeous sites in Seattle, the Corson Building. Millen and Lily designed the majority of their furnishings by themselves. Millen drew the invitations to complement the Corson Building as well as their chicken coops near the house which they lived in.

?We found seed bombs as wedding favors, personalized for each region of the country the friends came from, along with a taco bar at the end of the wedding ceremony.?The bride told us.

?I performed from the point both of my husband and I were sure about-it was the wedding area, and for this reason, I came up with personal city gardens with the aim that the wedding would feel exclusive and interesting.?

?We celebrated the day by the way of a very fresh chicken coop idea, as the Corson Building had it and I showed fetish for the mean as well.? Lily added, ?Vera Wang style mixed up with chicken coop! And the colors of the wedding were peachy. That was fantastic!?

?We originated a great number of DIY elements in respect of save-the-date card and wedding invitations, colored coffee filter wreaths, painted heart wreaths, ombre colored handkerchiefs, welcome flags, innovative thrilling wedding favors, as well as our cake festoons and its topper.?

During this amazing wedding, Lily still has some tips for girls who are going to have their wedding ceremonies in the near future: Absolutely get your inspiration as much as you can by all the magnificent concepts from blogs or magazines, but do not miss your own style and always make a truthful statement of who you and your prince charming are. Give an honest statement of your tastes and interests. As this coming day does not only mean your day, it is the day which would also make it meaningful for all the present.
