UK to risk EU court challenge over tougher insurance rules

By Huw Jones

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain intends to implement a tougher version of European Union rules on capital adequacy for its own insurers, even at the risk of a legal challenge in the bloc's courts, a top regulator has said.

Andrew Bailey, chief executive of Britain's Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA), said EU rules known as Solvency II, due to come into effect in 2016 at the earliest, would not be comprehensive enough.

"To mitigate this risk, we plan to use 'early warning indicators' in our supervisory work," Bailey said in a letter to Andrew Tyrie, chairman of parliament's Treasury Committee.

The PRA wants to avoid a repeat of the Equitable Life scandal, which saw the world's oldest life assurer nearly collapse after making promises to policyholders that it could not keep.

It is the latest example of Britain, which is home to the EU's biggest financial centre and had to bail out a number of its banks in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, losing patience over EU curbs on national supervisors.

Solvency II is a set of European rules requiring insurers to use approved in-house models to calculate their capital buffers.

Bailey said the indicators to be applied to British-based insurers, which he did not detail, would trigger "immediate supervisory action" if they suggested that insurers were using the models to cut back on capital.

Tyrie said this was probably necessary as complex models are all too easily circumvented.

Solvency II is a part of an EU drive for "maximum harmonisation" that leaves little wiggle room for national insurance supervisors to top measures up or water them down.

"We believe we can implement these early warning indicators in the UK within the S-II framework, but in any event we would pursue this approach and accept the risk of EU challenge," Bailey said.

If it imposes add-on rules, Britain could be taken to the European Court of Justice, which has the power to enforce their removal.

Britain has also been fighting for discretion to introduce extra capital requirements on banks beyond EU-agreed levels from 2014; the insurance indicators echo moves by Bailey to counter investor scepticism over how banks use in-house models to determine capital requirements.

Bailey said flexibility was needed in the regulation of insurers because Solvency II did not fully address risks such as troubled sovereign debt.

Solvency II has been a decade in the making and was due to come into effect this year, but has been delayed until at least 2016 because of disagreements over some of the fine detail.

"In particular, it is unclear to us that the French authorities will now be able to agree to any directive that we consider prudentially acceptable," Bailey said. Germany is also looking for a long phase-in of a decade or more, he added.

Ancient Egyptian Fun Facts ~ EGY-KING

The ancient Egyptians had great lives and in spite of working so hard, they never forgot leisure and recreation. Thus, equal or sometimes even more importance was given to pursuing leisure activities. Some of the activities which the ancient Egyptians pursued were:

Fishing : Although fishing was a means of subsistence for some, it was a pastime as well. Drawings from the Old and New kingdom display fishing in a recreational context. As a matter of fact, this evidence suggests that the Egyptians were the first to fish for pleasure. Many different fishing artifacts such as rods and various types of hooks have been unearthed to show the versatility of their equipment. Fishing for survival was traditionally carried out with a net or spear, while the angler used a rod and line.

Hunting : Javelin throwing was mostly associated with hunting for both sport and the provision of food. However, with the arrival of farming and agriculture, hunting for survival became outdated in ancient Egypt. However, hunting continued to be practiced a sport especially by the noble class and pharaohs.Lions were hunted with the help of a bow and arrow from a chariot.

One of the archaeologists JH Breasted, recorded the ancient records of Egypt which pointed out the fact that Amenhotep III hunted and killed as many as 102 fierce lions Likewise, archery was a very popular sports recreation in Egypt; although it seems to have been practiced more by royalty for entertainment purposes than for practical means.

Sport : The ancient Egyptians enjoyed their sport. In fact, many athletic events and some team sports have descended from this land long time back. One team sport was very similar to hockey. Wielding clubs made of palm branches, they would hit a ball made of leather stuffed with papyrus and stitched. The bow and arrow was not only used in hunting and warfare but as sport as well. One of the oldest sports, archery was practiced in ancient Egypt.

The contestants were judged on accuracy on the target as well as strength to pull the bow. Additionally, the Nile provided calm waters for another of ancient Egypt's more popular sports namely swimming and rowing. Some of the wealthier classes had pools built for princes to learn and practice the sport.

Just chilling out : Apart from the above stated activities and sports that ancient Egyptians indulged in, there were some other activities which did not involve any rigorous physical activity. The ancient Egyptians played a variety of games which were different for adults and children. The children mostly played board games but occasionally also played with toys made especially for the little children.

Since boards games of all quality have been discovered it is needless to say that the games were played by all classes of people in Ancient Egypt. The most popular of these was the game Senet especially with the wealthier males of the society. Senet was a popular Ancient Egyptian board game. This game symbolized the struggle of good against evil. The evil forces tried to stop you from reaching the Kingdom of the god Osiris. The rules of this game were very complex.

It consisted of a board with 30 holes, 3 rows and 10 columns. Most of the games used 7 pawns, sticks or knucklebones for each of the two players but some only had 5. During the New Kingdom, the game of Senet had acquired a religious and magical interpretation which symbolized the passage of the deceased through the other world with his resurrection dependent upon his/her ability to win the game.

Music was an integral part of both Egyptian culture and religion in spite of not having any written record of annotated music. As a matter of fact, it was believed that music pleased the gods and mortals alike and nearly any festival or banquet included musicians. Many depictions and artifacts exist including a number of instruments that have been preserved.

In addition to these, ancient Egypt sports also included lengthy marathons which are a part of a number of ancient Egyptian texts. Marathons played a part in the coronation festivities of pharaohs throughout most ancient Egyptian history.

LG will launch the world's first 55inch curved OLED HDTV

We visited LG's HQ earlier this month and heard that the curved OLED HDTV prototypes it showed at CES are due for release, and now it's official. A Korean press release indicates we can expect the 55EA9800 to launch in the next month, with shipments starting in June. According to the specs, its 4.3mm depth results in a weight of just 17kg, probably thinks to a carbon-fiber reinforced frame. Like an IMAX theater screen, the edges are curved towards the viewer to provide a more immersive feeling. Given the fact that we're still waiting for LG's flat OLED TVs to see a wider release we doubt it will arrive on US shelves any time soon, but until then you can check out our in-person pics from CES below, and a video after the break.

B787 1st test flight in Japan since battery fire

TOKYO (AP) ? Japan's All Nippon Airways has successfully conducted its first test flight of the Boeing 787 aircraft since battery problems grounded the planes earlier this year.

Ray Conner, president of Boeing's consumer airline division, and ANA President Shinichiro Ito were aboard the flight Sunday.

The aircraft safely completed a two-hour flight before returning to Tokyo's Haneda Airport.

Batteries aboard two 787s failed less than two weeks apart in January, causing a fire aboard one plane and smoke in another. The root cause of those problems is still unknown.

Boeing has since developed and tested a revamped version of the battery system, with changes designed to prevent and contain a fire.

Japan's transport ministry approved Boeing's modifications Friday following similar steps by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.

Analysis: China's 4G bonanza to shake up mobile gear vendor market

By Simon Johnson and Leila Abboud

STOCKHOLM/PARIS (Reuters) - Chinese telecom operators will start awarding contracts for super-fast mobile networks this year, kicking off the third wave of a global investment cycle that is reshaping the competitive landscape among telecom equipment makers.

China, the world's biggest mobile market with 1.1 billion subscribers, is likely to further alter the picture at the expense of European suppliers by giving a huge boost to Huawei and its smaller Chinese rival ZTE.

Huawei already took a chunk of Europe's fourth generation mobile contracts last year, so another big win for it could be especially tough for middle of the pack gear makers like Nokia-Siemens Networks and Alcatel-Lucent. Both have struggled to combat Chinese competition and generate steady profits since being formed in mergers in 2006.

"China will blow everything else away in terms of volume this year," said David Geary, head of Alcatel-Lucent's wireless division.

Sweden's Ericsson currently has the biggest slice of the global mobile equipment market with around 35 percent, while Huawei has 17 percent, NSN 15 percent and Alcatel-Lucent 12 percent. The first wave of 4G investments that began in 2010 in Japan and Korea favored Ericsson and NSN, and saw the arrival of newcomer Samsung, while the second in the U.S. went largely to Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent.

But even vendors that have done well in 4G so far need a China boost given the weak outlook for network gear this year.

Research firm Gartner sees network equipment sales up 2.3 percent to $79 billion in 2013 after a contraction last year.

China's three mobile operators - China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom - plan to spend a combined 345 billion yuan ($56 billion) this year on network upgrades. That includes investment in 4G, which multiplies mobile broadband speeds by up to five times for users of Apple Inc's iPhones or Samsung Electronics' Galaxy phones.

China Mobile will open the competition with a massive contract. It plans to plough 41.7 billion yuan ($6.75 billion) this year into 200,000 4G base stations in order to provide services for its 710 million customers - more than twice as many as there are people in the U.S.

Whether Europe-based network providers can grab a sizeable piece of that depends largely on whether the process for awarding 4G contracts in China follows the pattern set for the 3G ones, say analysts. Then, Huawei and ZTE gained a massive presence in local carriers' networks in part because of implicit government pressure to support local companies.

Senior sector executives are also worried that foreign companies' bids to win China business could also be complicated by a brewing trade spat with the European Union about whether Huawei and ZTE benefit from unfair trade subsidies.

DIFFERENT PRODUCTS

In past generations of mobile technology, telecom operators have often favored bids from the gear vendors that already supply them because it simplifies the upgrades and reduces costs.

Ericsson, Huawei, and NSN have surfed this trend, especially popular with Europe's cost-conscious operators, by offering multi-standard radio technology in which a single base station can handle 2G, 3G and 4G traffic.

Challengers including Samsung and Alcatel-Lucent, who have limited market share in 3G, are instead pitching so-called overlay 4G technology that is built from scratch on top of old networks.

How the competition between these products will play out in China, where the market is further complicated by the presence of two local standards known as TDD and FDD, remains to be seen.

But many analysts believe that Huawei and ZTE - already big suppliers of China Mobile since only 10-15 percent of 3G network contracts went to foreign vendors - will be winners, leaving the others to fight for smaller bits of the pie.

Michael Li, an analyst at China Everbright Research, predicted 60-70 percent of China's Mobile's 4G projects would go to Chinese because the bulk will be upgrades based on the current frequencies.

Peter Zhou, chief operating officer of Huawei's LTE business, said commercial discussions would start after June in China and predicted that Huawei would come out ahead in the global race for 4G leadership.

"I think that our single RAN (radio access network) focus since 2006 will assure our success," said Zhou. "Our customers when they choose a vendor they do not only think about price but rather the total cost of operating the network over time."

In trials for China Mobile, Huawei and ZTE have done the most pilots, followed by Alcatel-Lucent with 14.5 percent, according to IHS iSuppli. Ericsson and Nokia Siemens got just 8 and 7 percent of the trial business respectively.

Alcatel - along with Samsung, which is diversifying into networks from its stronghold in smartphones and TVs - is counting on beating the competition by persuading Chinese clients that single radio access network is not the way forward. Both Alcatel and Samsung hope to show Chinese clients that 4G networks with new technologies can be built faster and with lower operating costs.

For Alcatel-Lucent, which has swung back to net losses in the past four quarters and just replaced its CEO, China will be particularly key to the second half of the year. "We have a strong foundation in what will be the largest 4G opportunity in the world in the coming years," Geary said of China Mobile trials.

"Single RAN is one of the trends in the market, especially in Europe," I.P. Hong, head of global marketing in Samsung's Networks Business said in a statement. "However, if you look into large-scale LTE deployments in the U.S., Japan and Korea, most of them are overlay networks on top of existing technologies."

One CEO of a northern European operator, who did not want to be named because of the sensitivity of disclosing business information, agreed that there were significant cost advantages in awarding contracts to new network vendors.

"Prices for equipment have come down so much it is often cheaper for the new vendor to change out all the old equipment than to upgrade the site with new equipment," he said.

Apogee Duet for iPad & Mac

The Apogee Duet for iPad & Mac audio interface ($595 direct) brings stellar recording and playback capability to your iPad, iPhone, or Mac. Unlike the previous Duet 2, the new Duet has built-in iPad compatibility, which required some internal hardware changes. Granted, our Editors' Choice, the Focusrite iTrack Solo, which does the same thing, is much less expensive. But the Duet for iPad & Mac gives you your money's worth, thanks to its beautifully detailed audio quality, software integration, and ease of operation; you almost can't put a price tag on this level of performance.

Design and iPad Integration
I've already outlined the details in my review of the nearly identical Duet 2. Hit that review for a basic overview. Here, though, I'll focus on what makes the Apogee Duet for iPad & Mac different?and it's more than it appears, considering that the all-aluminum and glass enclosure, front panel, OLED display, and controls are exactly the same.

The iOS device integration is noteworthy in that it's a direct digital connection certified by Apple, without the need for the Camera Connection Kit, which only works with iPads, not iPhones or iPod touches. When connected, the Duet also charges iOS devices (although you'll need to plug in the bundled AC adapter), and offers iPad software control with Maestro, the company's low-latency mixer that works the same way on both iPads and Macs. In the hardware, iPad certification requires certain chips inside the peripheral device; it's more than just a firmware change, which is why existing Duet 2 owners can't add iPad connectivity without buying a whole new unit.

The Duet for iPad and Mac comes bundled with a cable loom with combination XLR and 1/4-inch instrument inputs and a pair of stereo 1/4-inch outputs, a usefully long 8-foot USB cable, an AC adapter, and an iPad cable. Unfortunately, the bundled iPad cable out of the box only works with older iPads, iPhones, and iPod touch devices with 30-pin connectors, not the newer Lightning Connector-equipped models; you'll need to pick up Apple's $29 Lightning-to-30-pin Adapter, which you can get at any Apple Store or online.

For this review, I tested the Apogee Duet for iPad & Mac with a 1st-generation Apple iPad, an Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch running OS X 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion), and a quad-core Xeon-based Mac Pro running OS X 10.7.5 (Lion), with a variety of programs including Avid Pro Tools 10 on the Mac and Apple GarageBand on the iPad.

Apogee Duet for iPad and Mac

Performance and Conclusions
Because the instrument and XLR cables are combined, you can't, say, leave a pair of stereo microphones connected while plugging in a guitar, the way you can with the Focusrite Forte. You also need the Duet's cable loom attached when driving a pair of studio monitor speakers, since the outputs aren't built into the enclosure like on the Forte.

That said, I'd rather have all of this than the Forte's key limitation, which is that you need the AC adapter plugged in whenever you're recording with phantom power, or whenever you need more headroom out of the headphone amp; the Duet doesn't have those limitations, and is much more of a portable audio interface for remote recording as a result, since you can run it from a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air's USB port.

The built-in mic preamps offer 75dB of gain range; Apogee says the company optimizes the mic pre circuit at each stepped gain setting to capture more dynamics and frequency bandwidth. Just as with the Duet 2, the Duet for iPad & Mac sounds incredible, during both playback and recording. Apogee makes a big point of the Duet's exceptional total harmonic distortion (THD) and noise floor figures, which mean a lot more here than they do in, say, the consumer electronics world, where stereo equipment manufacturers have been known to play with those numbers rather liberally.

In the real world, if you listen carefully, you can really hear the difference between the Duet and other interfaces?even against a direct competitor like the Focusrite Forte. The Forte sounds great, mind you; it records and plays back clean, pristine audio. But with the Duet, you get another level of midrange and high-end detail, both through the mic preamps, when tested with a Rode NT-1A large diaphragm condenser mic, and during playback, where you pick up a little more stereo separation and detail on individual instruments. You can make, mix, and monitor excellent recordings on either interface, but the Duet sounds just a bit better overall, in a variety of situations.

Recording on the iPad was also as easy as I expected; I installed the free Apogee Maestro app, which offers a similar interface to the desktop version. I plugged in the same mic, made sure phantom power was enabled, dialed in an appropriate level of gain, and recorded audio with GarageBand on top of MIDI virtual instrument tracks without a problem. Reliability was also rock solid throughout, on both test machines. I ran into some trouble with the earlier Duet 2, which may have been indicative of something up with my test systems, but the Duet for iPad & Mac ran flawlessly during the review?mimicking the behavior of the original FireWire-based Duet.

At the moment, the Apogee Duet for iPad & Mac is the best recording interface you can buy for the iPad. As far as computer recording is concerned, it's a little less clear, thanks to the host of competitors that have rushed to the scene since the original Apogee Duet proved a success following its launch in 2008. The Forte is an obvious choice if you're recording on the PC platform, thanks to its Windows compatibility, and it sounds really good in its own right, if slightly different than the Apogee Duet. Propellerhead Reason fans should have a look at the Propellerhead Balance, which offers clean sound and tight integration with Reason. Finally, if you're on a strict budget, you'll do well with the Editors' Choice Focusrite iTrack Solo which brings clear recording to PCs, Macs, and iPads at a low price, even if it lacks the level of detail and transparency that both the Duet and Forte offer.

South African aviator dies

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Laurie Kay, a South African pilot best known for flying a Boeing 747 passenger jet low over a Johannesburg stadium before the final of the 1995 Rugby World Cup, has died at the age of 67.

Kay had a suspected heart attack on Wednesday at the offices of the anti-rhinoceros poaching unit in Kruger National Park, South Africa's showcase game reserve, according to the country's parks service. Kay flew helicopters on patrols aimed at stopping poachers and was also doing technical work on a new anti-poaching surveillance aircraft, said Ike Phaahla, a parks spokesman.

"He was a great aviator," Phaahla said. "He was a gentleman. He had this outgoing personality. He made you feel very easy around him."

Kay was a South African Airways pilot when he swooped twice over Ellis Park stadium in a big jet at the start of the June 24, 1995, rugby final in which South Africa defeated New Zealand by a score of 15-12. The stenciled underside of the plane read "Good Luck Bokke" in a message of support for South Africa's national team, the Springboks.

One witness was Des Chetty, who was then a guard on the protective detail for F.W. de Klerk, the last president of the apartheid era that ended in 1994.

"It was a surreal feeling," Chetty wrote in an email. "One felt that if standing on the roof of the grandstands, you could have touched the belly of the plane. That's how close it felt. It was absolutely loud."

The daring stunt, depicted in the Hollywood movie "Invictus," electrified tens of thousands of fans who had no inkling that authorities had planned for a giant passenger jet to roar overhead. South Africa's ensuing victory on the field was a euphoric, unifying occasion for a country that had recently emerged from white racist rule.

Nelson Mandela, the anti-apartheid leader who became South Africa's first black president in 1994 elections, attended the game in a South African team shirt. It was a powerful gesture of reconciliation because rugby was a cultural bastion of white Afrikaners, who were guardians of the apartheid system.

Kay's flyover in a densely populated city flouted the most basic guidelines in international aviation, said John Carlin, author of "Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made a Nation."

"The idea was to release maximum vibrations, noise and power into the stadium with a view to energizing the crowd and energizing the players," Carlin said in a telephone interview from Spain. "He got the plane very near to stalling in order to get that maximum power effect when he was over the stadium. It was pretty outrageous."

According to South African Airways, Kay and his crew had spent the previous week plotting the course, flying it many times in a light plane, and spending hours in a flight simulator. Director Clint Eastwood included the flyover episode in "Invictus," the 2009 film about South Africa's rugby victory that starred Morgan Freeman as Mandela.

The Boeing 747 was empty save for a small crew during the flyover, making it highly maneuverable despite its large size, noted Tony Smit, a longtime friend and pilot.

"There was nothing daredevil about Laurie," said Smit, who praised Kay for charity work and the mentoring of young pilots. "Everything that he did in aerobatics shows, everything is calculated to the finest degree."

Carlin said Kay, like many South African whites, initially had reservations about Mandela as the African National Congress leader negotiated an end to apartheid in the early 1990s. But that changed when the pair met on an international flight, according to the author. Mandela asked Kay, the captain, if he could upgrade members of his delegation from economy class, and Kay was charmed by Mandela's gracious manner.

"He was one more in a long, long line of people who succumbed to Mandela's charisma and general seductive abilities," Carlin said.

Even Mandela was startled during the 1995 flyover, said Carlin, who interviewed some of the president's bodyguards afterward.

"I don't think he had been prepared for this particular detail of the day's choreography," he said.

Fire in Russian psychiatric hospital kills 38

(AP) ? A fire raged through a psychiatric hospital outside Moscow early Friday, killing 38 people, including two nurses, emergency officials said.

A third nurse managed to save two patients and they were the only three thought to have survived, the state news agency RIA Novosti reported, citing the Health Ministry.

Police said the fire, which broke out at about 2 a.m. local time (6 p.m. Eastern, 2200 GMT) in the one-story hospital in the Ramenskoye settlement, was caused by a short circuit, RIA Novosti reported.

A photograph on the website of the emergency services showed a building consumed by flames.

The emergency services also posted a list of the patients indicating they ranged in age from 20 to 76.

38 die in mental hospital fire outside Moscow

(AP) ? A fire swept quickly through a psychiatric hospital outside Moscow early Friday, killing 38 people, most of them in their beds, officials said.

Health Ministry officials said that the one-story hospital brick-and-wood building housed patients with severe mental disorders.

An emergency ministry official said the fire started in a wooden annex and then spread to the main brick building which had wooden beams.

The patients were under sedatives and most of them did not wake up, Yuri Deshevykh of the emergency situations ministry told RIA Novosti.

At least 29 people were burned alive, said Irina Gumennaya, a spokeswoman for the Russian Investigative Committee.

Moscow region governor Andrei Vorobyev said some of the hospital windows were barred.

Officials from the Russian Investigative Committee said they are looking at poor fire regulations and short circuit as possible causes for the blaze that engulfed the hospital in the Ramenskiy settlement, some 85 kilometers (53 miles) north of Moscow.

Investigators listed 38 people ? 36 patients and two doctors ? as dead. Only one nurse and two patients managed to escape, according to the health ministry. The emergency services also posted a list of the patients indicating they ranged in age from 20 to 76.

A spokeswoman for the Investigative Committee told Russian news agencies that most of the people died in their beds.

Belovoshin of the emergency ministry said that it took fire fighters an hour to get to the hospital following an emergency call because a ferry across the canal was closed and the fire fighters had to make a detour.

Vorobyev told Russian state-television that the fire alarm seems to have worked but the fire spread too quickly.

Russia has a poor fire safety record, with about 12,000 deaths reported in 2012. In January, a fire in an underground parking lot killed 10 migrant workers from Tajikistan who were working and living there. In a similar incident in September, 14 Vietnamese workers were killed by fire at a clothing factory near Moscow.

In one of the most high-profile case of negligence, more than 150 people died in a night club in the city of Perm after a pyrotechnic show ignited a wooden ceiling.

National Air Traffic Controllers Association representative says staff ...

Tom Rizzardo, the Dallas-Fort Worth facility representative of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, says the weather would not have made a difference in yesterday?s diverted flights from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport if there had been enough air traffic controllers working.

The Federal Aviation Administration attributed the diverted flights to ?a combination of weather and staffing shortages? as a result of automatic federal spending cuts. The agency on Sunday began furloughing employees.

Yes, Rizzardo said, the airport and airlines faced a combination of factors yesterday, but a staffing shortage in the D/FW Approach Control tower ?began the domino effect? of flight diversions. Some air traffic control shifts in the tower cabs have been operated with as few as four people instead of seven controllers.

?When the arrival rate [of airplanes] has to be cut to 75 percent or 50 percent of normal due to staffing restrictions that causes aircraft to be sequenced into lengthier streams and ? forces them into holding pattern,? Rizzardo wrote today in an email. ?In this case, we anticipated a 30-minute delay because we were unable to run triple approaches to the D/FW Airport due to the lack of staffing.?

However, when weather conditions forced a runway change, the planes could not withstand a longer delay and needed to divert, Rizzardo said. If full staffing had been in place, the planes either would have landed or their delay time would have been shorter, he added.

Rizzardo expects flight delays and other issues to get worse in the coming weeks ?as mandatory vacation time? puts more demands on staff.

PFT: Chiefs, Dolphins reportedly still talking Albert

PeadGetty Images

As this year?s crop of incoming players, especially those taken in the first two rounds, celebrate their new circumstances, they need to keep one thing in mind.

Several months from now, there?s a chance they will think those circumstances stink.

Rams running back Isaiah Pead fell right into that category last season, despite being the 50th overall pick in the 2012 draft.? Presumed to be the heir apparent to Steven Jackson, Pead became largely forgotten last year, sliding behind seventh-rounder Daryl Richardson.

?Honestly, I would call it miserable,? Pead said of his rookie season, via the University of Cincinnati official website. ?Miserable life.? Miserable four-five months.?

When the season finally ended, Pead packed up and left.

?I took off and I didn?t come back until it was time to,? Pead said.? ?I just wanted to stay out of this area, I came back for a couple days to pack up then all the memories and walking back into my house by myself, had a couple days by myself, I just needed to get out of that area.?

Pead is partially responsible for his misery.? He didn?t deal well with being demoted behind a guy taken 202 spots later, showing up late for a pair of meetings.

?I was literally fed up with football,? Pead said.? ?Not a quitter, not quitting, I was just tired of football.? Tired of practice for the day and I would just lay there play video games and whatnot because it was so miserable, so stressful.?

With a fresh opportunity coming from the departure of Jackson, Pead is ready to turn the page.

?Whole new era, whole new attitude, whole new team, whole new Pead,? Pead said. ??I?m not going to sit and linger on something, but I am one to not forget about a situation.? I am moving on from last year, last year is last year, but I have not forgot about last year.? I wouldn?t call it revenge, but the chip that I put on my shoulder is just a little bigger.?

He needs to perform more than a little better to erase the head start that Richardson earned in 2012.? While Pead finished with 10 carries for 54 yards, Richardson had 98 carries for 475 yards.

Pead also needs to hope the Rams don?t use one of their high draft picks on a rookie who?ll get a chance to in 2013 that which Pead couldn?t in 2012.

P&G's product push to weigh on profit, shares fall

By Jessica Wohl

(Reuters) - Procter & Gamble Co said on Wednesday that profit would fall more than Wall Street anticipated this quarter as it increases spending to promote several new products.

The news spooked investors who do not want to wait until 2014 for better sales increases. Shares of the world's largest household products maker fell as much as 6 percent after closing at an all-time high of $82.54 on Tuesday.

"There's a lot of frustration that they've been talking about a lot of actions they've been taking but we haven't really seen an acceleration in the sales growth," said David Blount, co-portfolio manager of the Growth & Income Fund at Eagle Asset Management, which includes P&G shares.

The company, maker of Pampers diapers, Gillette razors and many other products, has been under greater scrutiny to improve after cutting profit expectations in the past and learning that activist investor Bill Ackman invested in the stock.

Cincinnati-based P&G also posted a fiscal third-quarter profit on Wednesday that topped estimates despite sales that were weaker than both the company and analysts had anticipated.

Chief Executive Bob McDonald was roasted by analysts on a conference call a year ago when P&G gave a profit warning. While Wednesday's call was not as tense, analysts wanted to know why the company has not yet posted better sales growth more than a year into its turnaround.

P&G, which announced a $10 billion restructuring in February 2012, said that its push for more innovation means that several products such as new Iams pet foods and Olay skin creams will soon hit stores. After cutting billions of dollars in costs, along with eliminating hundreds of more jobs than anticipated, it will now spend more to promote those new goods and even to build the plants to produce them around the world.

FOURTH-QUARTER FORECAST

For the current fourth quarter ending in June, P&G said profit should fall to 69 cents to 77 cents per share, while analysts expected it to earn 81 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. P&G earned 82 cents per share in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2012.

The company cited factors including weak market growth, higher marketing and other costs and volatility in Venezuela, Argentina, Egypt, Syria and South Korea.

Wednesday's fiscal third-quarter results were a sharp departure from the fiscal second quarter, when P&G raised its annual profit forecast and its shares jumped. On Wednesday, on the heels of the better-than-expected third quarter profit, it raised only the bottom end of its annual forecast range by 2 cents per share.

"They're still making progress, they're still on the right track, it is just going to be a little more slowly than what people expected," said Edward Jones analyst Jack Russo.

P&G insists that its forecast is "realistic, not conservative," especially given the headwinds it faces such as volatility in Venezuela and elsewhere, Chief Financial Officer Jon Moeller told analysts.

Along with spending on marketing to promote its new products, P&G is dealing with what it calls a "choppy" economic recovery, and sees a 1 to 2 percent impact on its sales this year from foreign exchange rates.

Its shares slid as low as $77.48 on Wednesday and were last trading down 4.7 percent at $78.05, wiping out nearly all of this month's gains. Shares of rivals such as Colgate-Palmolive Co and Kimberly-Clark Corp were down less than 2 percent.

JOB CUTS EXCEED GOAL

While products such as single-dose Tide Pods laundry detergent have boosted U.S. sales, P&G said it still needs to figure out the formula for getting products such as Pantene shampoo and Olay skin creams to stand out among competitors. Net sales decreased in the hair care and skin care business in the latest quarter.

P&G is taking the right steps by cutting costs, bringing out new products and growing in developing markets, but it is important for it to show progress in the beauty unit in the next quarter or two, said Russo.

P&G said it earned 99 cents per share on a core basis in the quarter ended in March, topping analysts' target of 96 cents. Core earnings exclude items such as restructuring charges.

Overall sales rose 2 percent to $20.598 billion while analysts were looking for sales of $20.73 billion. The company had forecast 3 to 4 percent in sales growth.

P&G's organic sales, which strip out the impact of divestitures and foreign exchange changes, grew 3 percent - at the low end of its forecast of 3 to 4 percent.

On a net basis, the company earned $2.57 billion, or 88 cents per share, in the fiscal third quarter. That was up from $2.41 billion, or 82 cents per share, a year earlier.

McDonald declined to comment on any discussions he may have been having with Ackman, who is known to push for change at companies in which he invests. Ackman's Pershing Square had a 1.02 percent stake in P&G, or 27.95 million shares, as of December, making it P&G's eighth-largest shareholder, according to Thomson Reuters data.

P&G said it now plans to repurchase $6 billion of its stock this year, at the high end of its prior forecast for $5 billion to $6 billion in buybacks. Last June, P&G decided to hold off on buybacks, but in August quickly reverted back to its usual plan.

P&G also said it had cut 6,250 jobs as of March 31, ahead of its goal to cut 5,700 jobs by the end of June.

Aunt: Boston bombings suspect struggled with Islam

MAKHACHKALA, Russia (AP) ? The elder suspect in the Boston bombings regularly attended a mosque and spent time learning to read the Quran, but he struggled to fit in during a trip to his ancestral homeland in southern Russia last year, his aunt said.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev seemed more American than Chechen and "did not fit into the Muslim life" in Russia's Caucasus, Patimat Suleimanova told The Associated Press. She said when Tsarnaev arrived in January 2012, he wore a winter hat with a little pompom, something no local man would wear, and "we made him take it off."

Tsarnaev and his younger brother are accused of setting off the two bombs at the Boston Marathon on April 15 that killed three people and wounded more than 200. Tsarnaev, 26, was killed in a gun battle with police. His 19-year-old brother, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was later captured alive, but badly wounded.

On Monday, two U.S. officials said preliminary evidence from an interrogation suggests the brothers were motivated by religion but were apparently not tied to any Islamic terrorist groups. The U.S. officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the investigation.

U.S. investigators are focusing on the six months Tamerlan Tsarnaev spent last year in two predominantly Muslim Russian provinces, Dagestan and Chechnya, to see if he was radicalized by the region's militants who have waged a low-level insurgency against Russian security forces for years.

After returning from Russia, Tsarnaev made his presence known at a Boston-area mosque, where his outbursts interrupted two sermons that encouraged Muslims to celebrate American institutions such as the July 4 Independence Day and figures like Martin Luther King Jr., according to the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center. During one incident congregants shouted at him, telling him to leave, the center said in a statement released Monday.

The Tsarnaev family moved to the United States a decade ago, but the suspects' parents are now in Russia. Their father said he hopes to go to the United States this week to seek "justice and the truth."

Suleimanova, who wore a pea-green headscarf, said her nephew prayed regularly and studied the Muslim holy book. "He needed this. This was a necessity for him," she said.

Every day, using Skype, he spoke to his American-born wife, who had recently converted to Islam, and at times she instructed him on how to observe religious practices correctly when he lapsed, Suleimanova said Sunday from her home in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan. She said her nephew was considering bringing his wife to Dagestan.

His parents insist he spent much of his time visiting relatives in his mother's and father's extended families in Dagestan and Chechnya, but details of his whereabouts are vague and contradictory. His father says Tsarnaev stayed with him in Makhachkala, regularly sleeping late.

His aunt, however, said neither of Tsarnaev's parents was in Russia when he arrived. One reason his father came last year, Suleimanova said, was to make sure his elder son returned to the United States. It was not clear when his father or mother arrived. His mother was arrested in the U.S. in June on charges of shoplifting.

Tsarnaev's father explained his son's trip by saying he needed to get a new Russian passport. But an official with the federal migration service in Dagestan said Monday that Tsarnaev had applied for a new passport in July, but never picked it up, the Interfax news agency reported. Tsarnaev returned to the U.S. on July 17.

His mother, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, told the AP that her son greatly enjoyed his time with her relatives, but never traveled to her native village in a mountainous region of Dagestan, which is a hotbed of an ultraconservative strain of Islam known as Wahabbism. Wahabbism was introduced to the Caucasus in the 1990s by preachers and teachers from Saudi Arabia.

The mother said her relatives now all live in Makhachkala and the town of Kaspiisk. She refused to say which mosque her son frequented, but Tsarnaev's parents and aunt firmly denied that he met with militants or fell under the sway of religious extremists.

"He used to say, 'I want to go somewhere in the mountains, to be all by myself, to escape from everyday life, to be alone,'" Suleimanova said.

The suspects' father, Anzor Tsarnaev, said he intends to travel to the U.S. "I want normal justice," he said. "I have many questions for the police. You know, I am a lawyer myself and I want to clear up many things. .... I want justice and the truth."

The family said he wants to bring Tsarnaev's body back to Russia.

Is Staying In An Airport Hotel Worth It? - ArticleSnatch.com

Hyderabad is a metropolitan area and one of the districts in Andhra Pradesh. The metropolitan area is a popular business destination. People visit the city because of the many jewellery shops located here, because of the thriving entertainment hub, because of cricket, for the culture, for tourism, for education, and for other reasons.

If you are flying into town through the Hyderabad Airport, which is the most important airport in the city, there are many airport hotels available. Most people, are, however skeptical about staying in hotels near Hyderabad Airport and opt for other options such as the nearby Basheer Bagh hotels. So, is their fear justified?

The simple answer to this is that airport hotels are as good as other hotels. Staying in an airport hotel is actually a good idea if you are only flying into town to hold a few meetings and to then fly back home. You will save a lot of money by not venturing into town. A shuttle service will be all the transport you need.

The main reason why people fear airport hotels is because they associate them with bedbug problems. The fact is that this used to be a problem several years back, but todays airport hotels are just as clean as Basheer Bagh hotels.

Note that there are only a few 4 and 5 star hotels at the airport. You will not find such amenities as swimming pools, gym facilities, and wellness centers here. You will, however, find complementary Internet hook-up in most of them. These hotels do not seek to compete with the larger, more fashionable hotels in the city.

Airport hotels are great for business travelers because they are built with such travelers in mind. You will get such business friendly amenities as a business center with computer access, secretarial services, and faxing capabilities.

Most airport hotels are chain hotels. This is advantageous in that you will be staying at a hotel in the same chain when you visit another city. Not only will you know what to expect in terms of service, amenities, facilities, and cost, but they also have reward structures to reward their loyal guests.

Hotels near Hyderabad Airport do not offer much in terms interior dcor or architectural value, but this is not a problem if all you want is a place to have your meetings. Airport hotels can be noisy because of their proximity to the airport. You should, therefore, ensure that the hotel you go for has taken sound proofing measures.

You could find exactly what you need if you search well enough. You could have a travel agency do the search for you, but going to an online hotel booking site is the best option because you will compare different options. You get to filter your search results using star rating, chain, rates, and other parameters. The reviews you find here will help you make informed decisions. Online booking allows gives you anonymity, it saves you money, and it gives you unparalleled convenience.

  • A review of 2 prospective studies found efficacies of 44% as an add- on agent, and 75% as a primary agent. The studies had markedly different populations.
  • In a retrospective study, the treatment failure rates were 3X higher than that of intravenous valproic acid as an add-on agent in terminating status epilepticus.
  • Therefore, although it is used frequently, the evidence for use is limited and inconclusive in terminating status epilepticus.
