Stocks rise on strong GDP data; but market waits on Fed

stocks

Stocks finished flat on the final trading day of the month on Wednesday, after the Federal Reserve said it will maintain its bond-buying policy in its effort to bolster the economy.

(Read more: Obama defends Summers amid Fed speculation)

The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished 21 points lower, even though it had been up more than 100 points at its session high, setting a fresh intraday record of 15,634.32.

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed slightly higher. Earlier, the Nasdaq hit its best level since October 2000. But all three major averages rallied more than 4 percent each for the month and logged their best July performances since 2010.

The markets have been performing well since Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke reiterated last month that it would continue its monetary policies to stimulate the U.S. economy. On Wednesday, the central bank again said it will keep buying $85 billion in mortgage and Treasury securities per month. In its policy statement, the Fed also signaled its concern about higher mortgage rates and flagged the risks of inflation falling too far below its target.

But the Fed said that the economy is growing only modestly, a downgrade from its previous assessment in June.

(Watch:Art Cashin:Federal Reserve 'chickened out')

"Today's comments were what the market wanted," said Michael Sheldon, chief market strategist at RDM Financial Group. "The Fed didn't change too much in its statement?while the FOMC is likely to start tapering its asset purchase program before too long, Bernanke has reminded us that he is aware of the fact that rising rates can have an effect on the economy and inflation remains low.

"These two factors indicate that the Fed will likely not be in a big rush unless economic data strengthens faster than expected," Sheldon said.

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, traded above 13 on Wednesday. Among key S&P sectors, consumer discretionary and energy led the gainers, while utilities slid.

Earlier in the session, data showed that economic growth in the U.S. unexpectedly accelerated in the second quarter, with the GDP growing at a 1.7 percent annual rate, according to the Commerce Department. And private employers added 200,000 jobs in July, topping economists' expectations in an encouraging sign for the labor market recovery.

The ADP report came ahead of the widely-watched government jobs data, due at the end of the week. Economists surveyed by Reuters expect non-farm payrolls to have risen 184,000 in July.

(Read more:Big jobs number coming? Data firm says just 23,000)

In another upbeat sign for the economy, the pace of business activity in the Midwest picked up modestly in July. And U.S. labor costs rose in the second quarter, according to the Labor Department.

About 60 percent of S&P 500 companies have posted quarterly results so far, with 67 percent of firms exceeding earnings expectations and about 55 topping revenue estimates, according to the latest data from Thomson Reuters.

Asian and European shares were mixed ahead of the Fed announcement. The Japanese Nikkei widened losses as dollar-yen fell below the 98-handle, as investors digested the latest batch of corporate earnings. The Nikkei has been steadily declining since hitting a two-month high at 14,953 points on July 19.

iPhone 5S: Release-Date Prediction for Apple Gets Even Earlier

**Editor's Note: Click here for our list of June's hottest selling smartphones to see how the iPhone fared against the competition.**

There have been so many new reports of a new iPhone lately, if you hadn't been watching carefully, you might've assumed it was already available.

The latest comes from the German blog iFun, which quotes a very credible source "to be taken seriously" ? OK, admittedly, a possible red flag there ? that the next iPhone, presumably called the 5S, will be "coming to market" right after Labor Day. The suggested release date of Sept. 6 is the earliest we've heard forecasted.

The blog also says to look for "two new device types," but isn't clear what that means. One can only assume it's predicting the much-rumored "budget iPhone" that Apple has consistently denied; nonetheless, most analysts expect it's going to happen.

That cheaper device was "confirmed" by a recent investigation into working conditions at an Apple factory in China, where staff were supposedly working on plastic casings for a new iPhone. But again, take that one with a grain of salt.

The 5S isn't expect to look a lot different than last year's model, but it might include a fingerprint sensor connected to the home button for added security.

9. Dr.Phil posted on 3 hours ago 14

Well if you read PA's comparison between the Lumia 1020 and other devices like the Galaxy S4, you would know that the 1020 was really only slightly better than the S4's camera. PA mostly only gave the 1020 a one point advantage over the S4 (and occasionally the S4 beat or tied the 1020 in the comparison). So, given the fact that the Sony Honami is suppose to put more emphasis on the camera than Samsung did with the S4 (let's face it, Samsung mostly just wanted to put an HDR camera in the S4 without really giving it much thought) I would say that there is a chance the Honami could compete with the 1020. Not to mention the fact that the 1020 is still running on old hardware such as the Adreno 225 (which I think the Adreno 330 either gives 5 times or 10 times the performance, I don't have time to really double check) gives the Honami somewhat of an advantage because it's more future proof when it comes to modern mobile gaming or being able to run more intensive applications that may have yet to be released.

So, yes, I do believe the Honami can be a direct competitor to the 1020 if you make it to be by your own accord.

Phone does sound exciting. My main hjope is that once it's announced they release it within a month and not talk about it on social media forever without it being available.

I'm honestly not sure how you can knock the phone for being tested on 4.2.2 when 4.3 was literally just announced last week. Knowing Sony's announcement about upgrading existing devices to 4.3.

I don?t really care about benchmark anymore since it has S800.

but i want to know how good that the camera, screen and audio quality.

i just hope Sony make more compact phone with 4.3? - 4.7? Triluminos or WhiteMagic, Stereo speaker or Magnetic fluid speaker with walkman audio chip, 8 - 13MP Camera with Optical SteadyShot + G Lens + Bionz + Xenon or at least Powerful Dual LED, dust and waterproof, using the same design like Xperia SP/V/ZL and S800.

Come on! Don't expect 4.3 on devices just yet it needs time to put stuffs and debugging by the companies. I hate it when people are dissapointed by devices without 4.3 which was just released.

?Indescribably difficult?: As peace talks set to resume, Israel divided over release of Palestinian prisoners

Hours before Israeli and Palestinian envoys were set to resume peace talks for the first time in years, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry urged negotiators to reach ?reasonable compromises on tough, complicated, emotional and symbolic issues?.

But with negotiators set to sit down together on Monday night and Tuesday, Israeli society was divided over a government decision to release 104 Palestinian prisoners as part of the pre-condition for the talks.

?These men are terrible murderers ? how can they be let go?? asked Mika Bromberg as she stood outside the Israeli prime minister?s office at the weekend holding a black-and-white poster of Avraham Bromberg, her brother-in-law. Mr. Bromberg, an Israeli soldier, was killed while hitchhiking in 1981. The attackers shot him, stole his gun and pushed him out of a car.

?This is our last struggle for those killed. This morning my husband was so upset he collapsed,? said Ms. Bromberg.

Her son, Avi, named after his uncle, said, ?The state of Israel is betraying the people of Israel. This will lessen the motivation of soldiers who capture these terrorists and then they see the political establishment release these terrorists.?

Haaretz newspaper said the released prisoners were responsible for the deaths of 55 civilians and 15 soldiers.

Schoolteacher Rachel Weiss, 26, and her three children, aged three, two and nine months, were killed when the bus they were travelling on was set ablaze by a Molotov cocktail. A stranger, David Delarosa, 19, died as he tried to save them. Their killer is due to be released.

Some of the other victims of the prisoners due to be released included: Prof. Menachem Stern, one of Israel?s leading historians, a lawyer, a pregnant woman, teachers, a French tourist as well as dozens of Palestinians suspected of collaborating with Israel. One prisoner was involved in the murder of 15 suspected Palestinian collaborators.

A poll commissioned by the mass circulation Yisrael Hayom newspaper last week found that 84% of Israelis oppose releasing prisoners in exchange for returning to the negotiating table. The prisoners are due to be freed in four stages ? with the first coming as early as later this week when Israel?s Justice Minister Tzipi Livni is slated to meet Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat in Washington.

This is an indescribably difficult decision to make ? it is painful for the bereaved families, it is painful for the entire nation and it is also painful for me

Ahead of a cabinet vote on the prisoner release, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appealed directly to the Israeli public to support the release.

?This is an indescribably difficult decision to make ? it is painful for the bereaved families, it is painful for the entire nation and it is also painful for me,? Mr. Netanyahu wrote in an open letter released by the prime minister?s office.

Mr. Netanyahu said Israel had freed 10,000 Palestinian prisoners over the years as goodwill gestures and in efforts to restart peace talks.

?I believe it is of the utmost importance for the state of Israel to enter a diplomatic process,? he wrote. ?This is important both to exhaust the possibilities of ending the conflict with the Palestinians and to establish Israel?s position in the complex international reality around us.?

Some Israelis, including some who have lost close relatives to terror, agreed.

?Look how much Israel was prepared to do to release just one soldier,? said Robi Damelin, whose son David was killed by a Palestinian sniper in 2002. ?For them, these prisoners are soldiers. Why can?t we understand how important this is to them??

Ms. Damelin, who immigrated to Israel from South Africa, is active in the Parents Circle, a group of Israelis and Palestinians who have lost loved ones to the conflict.

?If we don?t release these prisoners, nothing will ever happen and things will never move forward,? she said. ?I saw in South Africa how people can change and I want it to happen here too.?

But writing for the Times of Israel, Dani Dayan, a businessman and chief foreign envoy of the pro-settler Yesha Council, said, ?The very notion of Palestinian preconditions before even reaching the negotiating table, to enter a process in which they would be the potential beneficiaries ? is utterly absurd. But when it involves the release of some of the most vicious terrorists of our time, it becomes obscene. And that obscenity has been made possible by none other then the U.S. Secretary of State.?

On Monday, Mr. Kerry appointed a former U.S. ambassador to Israel, Martin Indyk, to shepherd the peace talks.

?I know the negotiations are going to be tough, but I also know that the consequences of not trying could be worse,? Mr. Kerry said.

The initial negotiations are mostly over procedure.

Austria faces questions over Nazi-era bell dedicated to Hitler

Hanns Kammerstaetter / AP

The bell, with Adolf Hitler's name on it, in the castle of Wolfpassing, Austria - in this 2004 file photo.

By George Jahn, The Associated Press

VIENNA, Austria - Like many others in Austria's countryside, a tower bell above the red-tiled rooftops of Wolfpassing village marks the passing of each hour with an unspectacular "bong."

But this bell is unique: It is embossed with a swastika and praise to Adolf Hitler.

And unlike more visible remnants of the Nazi era, the bell was apparently overlooked by Austrian officials up to now.

Ensconced in the belfry of an ancient castle where it was mounted by fans of the Nazi dictator in 1939, the bell has tolled on for nearly 80 years. It survived the defeat of Hitler's Germany, a decade of post-war Soviet occupation that saw Red Army soldiers lodge in the castle and more recent efforts by Austria's government to acknowledge the country's complicity in crimes of that era and make amends.

Some of those efforts have focused on identifying relics of that time and ensuring they're either removed or put in historical context. As an example, officials often cite government moral and material support for the restoration of the Mauthausen concentration camp, where a museum documents atrocities for school children and other visitors.

The Wolfpassing bell pays homage to Hitler for his 1938 annexation of Austria ? a move supported back then by the majority of the nation's citizens. It describes Hitler as "the unifier and Fuehrer of all Germans" and says he freed the "Ostmark" ? Nazi jargon for Austria ? "from the yoke of suppression by foreign elements and brought it home into the Great-German Reich."

Local historian Johannes Kammerstaetter says most villagers would have known about it.

But village mayor Josef Sonnleitner asserts even the villagers had no clue until the first media reports last month on the "Fuehrerglocke," or "Fuehrer Bell."

"Nobody cared until all this publicity," Sonnleitner?said on the telephone. He refused a request for a longer interview, saying he was busy for the next two weeks with haying.

In any case, the government's recent sale of the castle ? with all its historical trappings ? has suddenly made the bell an issue beyond the sleepy village of 1,500 people about 60 miles west of Vienna.

In a country particularly sensitive about suggestions it has not fully faced its Nazi past, officials are scrambling for explanations of why the bell apparently evaded notice for so long. They also are under pressure to justify a ruling by the government agency in charge of historic monuments that it must remain part of the castle as part of its heritage? despite the refusal of the new owner to say what he plans to do with it.

Propagating Nazi values or praising the era is illegal in Austria.

Kammerstaetter, the historian, asked state prosecutors to examine whether the government's sale of the bell was a criminal offence. He says the change of ownership could constitute a case of "spreading National Socialist ideology" on the part of the government agency in charge of state-owned property.

Raimund Fastenbauer, a senior official of Vienna's Jewish community, invokes other concerns, noting that other Hitler-era relics like the dictator's house of birth in the western town of Braunau have become a magnet for neo-Nazis.

"I think the best thing would be if the bell disappeared and was buried somewhere," he says.

For its part, the government says that the sale was legal, along with the decision to keep the bell in the belfry as an integral component of the castle.

Economics Minister Reinhold Mitterlehner says the agency overseeing the sale was not aware of the inscription.

He notes in a letter to Kammerstaetter that "the bell up to now was neither publicly displayed nor generally accessible," adding that he does not see the sale as constituting a criminal offense.

Ernst Eichinger, a spokesman for the agency responsible for government real-estate, says that with a portfolio of more than 28,000 buildings ? many of them huge ? "we cannot search every centimeter" before a sale.

Concerns are heightened by the lack of clarity about what the new owner, Tobias Hufnagl, plans to do with the relict.

Sonnleitner, the Wolfpassing mayor, says has not been able to directly contact Hufnagl, despite weeks of trying.

Despite numerous Associated Press queries, Hufnagl said he had "no interest" in discussing the matter.

Florida bound flight forced to make emergency landing

Story by Chari Staples/CBS 12

CLEARWATER, Fla.-- More than 150 people are on their way to the Tampa Bay area after their flight from Iowa was forced to make an emergency landing in Georgia.

Passengers aboard Allegiant Air 863 are expected to arrive at their original destination -- St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport -- at around 6 a.m. Monday.

Just after 9 o'clock on Sunday night, the pilot saw a light indicating that there was fire in the cargo area.

The evacuation came after an emergency landing at a shut-down airport.

While crews on the ground got ready at the airport, passengers in the air were told to brace for an emergency landing.
"Not knowing what was going to happen next, we didn't know if it was going to be a safe landing, or a horrendous landing, we didn't know where we were going down," one passenger said.
"It was wild," another passenger said. "I stayed calm somewhat, but I could tell that once we stopped people were very panicky, wanting to get to that exit right away."

And with good reason. The pilot of the MD80 jet noticed a warning light that indicated a fire in a cargo area of the plane, airline spokesman Brian Davis said.

The flight crew quickly made the call to land the jet at the nearest acceptable airport.

Despite the unexpected and scary landing, passengers said the airline and airport staff did everything they could to make the situation as safe as possible.

Whitecaps lose second straight match as Hoppenot leads Union to 1-0 win

The Vancouver Whitecaps almost pulled off a miracle Saturday.

Or at least a scoreless draw.

But in the end, they could not make up for being shorthanded most of the game and fell 1-0 to the Philadelphia Union, suffering their first home loss of the Major League Soccer season.

Second-half substitute Antoine Hoppenot?s goal in the 85th minute proved to be the difference. The Whitecaps gave a valiant, if not sensational, effort as they were forced to play with 10 men after midfielder Jun Marques Davidson received a red card for head-butting Keon Daniel in the back in the eighth minute.

More Related to this Story

?The obvious pivotal point in the game (was) early on in the game when Jun Marques (got) sent off,? said Whitecaps coach Martin Rennie. ?He reacted in a way that he shouldn?t have. He made a mistake and, ultimately, we paid the price for that, because I thought we played well after that.?

The Whitecaps (9-7-5), who were unbeaten in 10 previous home games, recorded their second consecutive loss.

Philadelphia (9-6-7) remained unbeaten in three games.

?We were unbeaten here for a long time,? said Rennie. ?We?d had a lot of good nights and gotten a lot of great results. It?s disappointing to lose that undefeated record at home.

?I feel like, even with the 10 men, we put enough into the game to at least preserve that record.?

The Whitecaps were forced to play with 10 men after midfielder Jun Marques Davidson received a red card for head-butting Keon Daniel in the back. The incident resulted after Keon kicked the ball while Davidson was on top of it after a whistle.

The Union player earned a yellow card for the infraction and had turned and started to walk away following a face-to-face confrontation with Davidson when the Whitecap decided to seek some revenge.

?It?s just what happened,? said Davidson, a defensive specialist, finding himself under media scrutiny for a rare time in his two-season Vancouver tenure. ?I reacted wrong and, for all of it, I just want to apologize to all the players.?

He also apologized to fans, adding the miscue was out of character for him.

The Whitecaps still managed to match Philadelphia?s five shots on target, while directing 14 on goal, down slightly from the Union?s 16.

Hoppenot scored off a Philadelphia counter-attack moments after Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath had robbed Whitecaps striker Camilo at the other end of the pitch.

?Obviously, the red card changed the game pretty early on,? said MacMath. ?But I thought the team played really well and did well being patient throughout the game and waiting to get that final goal.?

MacMath earned his seventh shutout of the season in one of his busier games.

?The first half wasn?t too busy,? said MacMath, who was credited with five saves. ?But the second half, especially with them pressing, after they gave up the goal, it was a busy game for me and a busy game for the team in general.?

The setback deprived Vancouver goalkeeper Brad Knighton of a chance to beat his former squad after being released by Philadelphia following the 2010 season and forced to play a campaign in a lower-tier circuit in 2011. Knighton made some timely saves, but now, after his second consecutive loss, risks losing his starter spot to former Danish Superliga star David Ousted, who was signed in June.

?We?ve made this place a fortress over the last six months, and it?s a tough one,? said Knighton, who recorded four saves. ?I felt like we had our chances today, and we just didn?t take them.?

The Whitecaps were fortunate not to lose Knighton after he and Philadelphia captain Jack McInernerey, a former teammate and close friend, knocked heads in the 24th minute.

But the Whitecaps would not be so lucky when it came to converting scoring chances or having other players remain healthy. Vancouver lost striker Kenny Miller to a groin injury just two minutes into the second half and central defender Brad Rusin late in the game.

The contest ultimately turned after Rusin left in the 81st minute after he was hurt blocking a shot. He was replaced by Carlyle Mitchell, who was victimized on Philadelphia?s goal.

?It?s hard to change the centre back like we had to at that moment,? said Rennie.

Hoppenot scored as Mitchell gave the ball away, fell and then could not get up in time to prevent Aaron Wheeler from sending a short pass to him. Mitchell said he blocked the first pass but wasn?t able to prevent the Union from continuing on goal.

Rennie stuck with the same lineup, but will be forced to make changes in the next game Aug. 3 at Portland. Davidson received an automatic one-game suspension, and could face further discipline from the league. Fellow midfielder Gershon Koffie will also serve a one-game suspension after taking his fifth yellow card of the season as he fell in the Philly box and tried to draw a foul.

Miller and Rusin?s injuries also raise questions about their availability, and Knighton could be replaced in favour of the higher-paid Ousted.

?There?s other players ready to play that could play if they?re not in the starting lineup,? said Rennie. ?And, it?s up to them to get in the lineup and play well and take their chances.?

UTSA extends contract of head coach Brooks Thompson

The University of Texas San Antonio has extended the contract of head coach Brooks Thompson through the 2016-17 season, the school announced on Friday.

The 43-year old Thompson has helmed the Roadrunners for seven seasons and has accumulated a record of 103-111 during that time, including an NCAA Tournament appearance during the 2010-11 season that resulted in the school?s first-ever postseason victory with a win over Alabama State in the opening round.

UTSA is set to join Conference USA this season after spending only one season in the WAC.

?We are very appreciative of the job Brooks has done for this program,? ?UTSA Athletic Director Lynn Hickey said. ?When he arrived, he was faced with a tremendous challenge and he and his staff have turned things around both on and off the court. When you look at the things he has done with our APR and graduation rate and then see the quality and high character of the student- athletes he has brought to UTSA, we wanted to show support in return. Our recent conference moves have created another tremendous challenge for men?s basketball and this extension provides stability that is deserved as we enter a very competitive league in Conference USA.?

Last season the Roadrunners finished 9-21 and 3-14 in the WAC before joining Conference USA earlier this month.

Belkin Chambray Tab Cover with Stand for iPad mini

Chambray Tab Cover with Stand for iPad mini

Belkin, www.belkin.com

Pros?

Attractive-ish; keeps iPad fairly secure; multiple-angle stand

Cons?

Pretty average; partly obscures mute switch; no magnetic sleep/wake

US$30 + shipping

Reviews This run-of-the-mill case offers a multiple-angle stand and decent protection.

?

True folio cases, such as Belkin?s US$29.99?Chambray Tab Cover with Stand?for the iPad mini, are pretty run-of-the-mill. They protect your mini fairly well, but they?re not terribly stylish. Luckily, the Chambray Tab Cover is a bit more stylish than most, though it does add some bulk.

The Chambray Tab Cover is a two-tone folio case that comes in four main colours: blue, pink, khaki and dark grey. The case features a chambray fabric (that?s a plain weaved cotton, in non-textile speak), a dark grey faux-leather binding, and a dark grey faux-leather magnetic tab closure for keeping your mini protected.

Inside, the Tab Cover has four faux leather corners that hold the mini securely in place, as well as a soft grey lining that lies against the screen. The Tab Cover is both a cover and a stand ? the case allows you to prop up your mini in at least three different landscape orientation angles. There are three small notches on the inside of the front cover to secure the cover in set angles, but the inner material is grippy enough that you can angle the mini pretty much however you like.

Chambray Tab Cover with Stand for iPad mini - Pink - HeroImageThe Chambray Tab Cover?s corners make it easy to pop your mini in and out of the case. They?re surprisingly secure ? not once did my mini fall on my face while I was trying to read in bed ? but since they?re made of faux leather and not hard plastic, they can look a little off when compared to the rest of the design. The case leaves access to most of the mini?s ports and buttons, including the Sleep/Wake button, volume buttons, headphone jack and Lightning port, and there?s a cutout for the rear-facing camera. You can still access the mini?s mute switch, though one of the corners does partly obscure it.

Whether you?ll like the Chambray Tab Cover enough to buy it will really depend on if you like the look of the two-tone chambray and faux leather fabric. It?s not a particularly outstanding case ? it doesn?t even have a trigger for the iPad?s magnetic Sleep/Wake functionality ? but if you think it?s an attractive case, it?s a decent buy. It?ll keep your mini safe and secure (it feels like it can take a drop or two, but not five), and it?s easy to switch out if you?d like to try a different case later on.

U.S. coach Klinsmann to miss Gold Cup final Sunday due to suspension

The U.S. soccer team will be missing a key figure for the Gold Cup final against Panama on Sunday: their coach.

Jurgen Klinsmann was suspended for one game Friday by CONCACAF?s disciplinary committee, the result of his ejection in the 87th minute of a 3-1 victory over Honduras in the semifinals Wednesday. Klinsmann was dismissed ?for showing dissent towards the referee by throwing the ball in a violent manner,? the disciplinary committee found, and said FIFA rules require anyone ejected from a match to be suspended for the following game.

More Related to this Story

The decision cannot be appealed.

?I don?t think it changes too much,? U.S. captain DaMarcus Beasley said Friday. ?It?s always good to have him on the bench, but he?ll give his wisdom before the game ... make sure we get off on the right foot. But it?s not going to be the same not seeing his face on the sideline, giving us instructions when we need it and being the enthusiastic person that he is on the bench. Especially, when we score or he needs to tell us something if we need to change something.?

Klinsmann was irate Wednesday after the referee failed to issue cards on a series of hard fouls against the Americans. He could be seen yelling and gesturing angrily in the direction of the referee, and was told to leave the field after he slammed a ball into the ground.

Klinsmann later apologized, saying he acted out of frustration.

?I was talking to the ref as well. There weren?t any cards,? Beasley said. ?I got hit three, four times in somewhat the same sequence, and they didn?t call anything but a foul. So I could understand his frustration. I was frustrated.?

The Americans are seeking their fifth Gold Cup title. They also are looking to extend their record 10-game winning streak in all matches.

?This is what he lives and dies for,? Eddie Johnson said. ?This is the opportunity that American soccer has been wanting, to have a coach with such experience, who?s played at the highest level and played on big teams and managed big players, to be in this position to help us get to where we?re trying to go in American soccer.?

?No hidden agenda in India-Africa engagement?

Accra, July 24 (IANS) There is no hidden agenda in India?s engagement with Africa, which is purely meant to cooperate on developing a continent with similarities and a desire to offer tried and tested solutions, India?s Deputy High Commissioner to Ghana Ajaneesh Kumar has said.

Ajaneesh Kumar, who has spent the past month meeting heads of the country?s universities, told the faculty and students of the University of Development Studies (UDS) at Tamale, the northern regional capital, that his country?s engagement with Africa is ?based on solidarity, lack of conflict of interest and shared historical experiences.?

He said India and Ghana would continue to foster cordial relations which were established decades ago.

UDS vice chancellor Haruna Yakubu appealed to the Indian High Commission to offer scholarships to its students to push their education, adding: ?The university needs to build a strong collaboration with India in the form of scholarships in areas that are beneficial to both countries to facilitate development, especially in the area of ICT.?

In another meeting with officials from the Valley View University (VVU), a private institution, Ajaneesh Kumar said the Indian government provides a wide range of educational scholarships and training programmes to institutions and individuals who seek to further their studies in India.

He said students from the public universities have been benefitting from scholarship opportunities offered by the Indian government and the high commission intends to extend its support to universities outside Accra. This was one of the reasons the high commission wanted to establish a relationship with Valley View University.

The diplomat was pleasantly surprised to find that among the VVU team, two faculty members were trained in India. He encouraged them to serve as ambassadors for their institutions to promote Indian education in Ghana.

During a visit to the Univerisity of Cape Coast (UCC) in the central region, Ajaneesh Kumar said the high commisson was interested in collaborating with it to promote academic excellence with Indian universities.

He said the cooperation would lay the foundation for the high commission to link UCC to universities in India for staff and student exchanges and noted that it would also be eligible for educational grants from the Indian government and other organisations.

UCC Vice Chancellor D.D. Kuupole expressed his gratitude to the high commission for showing interest in the university and expressed confidence that the partnership would contribute to exchange of knowledge and culture. He said the School of Medical Sciences (SMS) was a priority area where the university needed a lot of support for capacity building and staff and student exchange programmes.

Obama, lawmakers square off over NSA authority

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Obama administration squared off with skeptical lawmakers Tuesday over efforts to terminate the government's authority to collect phone records of millions of Americans, a proposition that exposed sharp divisions among members of Congress.

With a vote nearing on amendments to a $598.3 million bill to fund the military, the White House raised the alarm over a move to end the National Security Agency's authority under the USA Patriot Act, preventing the secretive surveillance agency from collecting records unless an individual is under investigation.

And in an unusual, last-minute lobbying move, Gen. Keith Alexander, head of the NSA, traveled to Capitol Hill to urge lawmakers to oppose the amendment in separate, closed-door sessions with Republicans and Democrats.

"We oppose the current effort in the House to hastily dismantle one of our Intelligence Community's counterterrorism tools," White House press secretary Jay Carney said in a late-night statement. "This blunt approach is not the product of an informed, open or deliberative process."

Carney said President Barack Obama is still open to addressing privacy concerns in the wake of documents leaked last month by former NSA systems analyst Edward Snowden that revealed that the vast nature of the agency's phone and Internet surveillance. But he said Obama wants an approach that properly weighs what intelligence tools best keep America safe.

In another sign the White House was treating the measure with serious concern, its rebuke came directly from the press secretary, rather than the more routine notices from Obama's budget office the White House normally uses to weigh in on pending legislation.

The proposal offered by Rep. Justin Amash, R-Mich., dovetails with another amendment to the defense bill to cut off funds for the NSA. The House is likely to vote on the amendments Wednesday.

The fierce debate over privacy and national security has divided Congress, transcending the partisan lines that typically characterize legislative fights ? especially in the House.

Tea party conservatives and liberal Democrats have backed the amendments, joined by libertarians like Amash who have expressed serious concerns about the government's surveillance. But national security hawks have strongly defended the programs, as have House leaders such as Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers, R-Mich.

In the Democratic-controlled Senate, the leaders of the Intelligence Committee have opposed the amendments, arguing that the surveillance programs have helped disrupt numerous attempted terrorist attacks.

"Any amendments to defund the program on appropriations bills would be unwise," Sens. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., the panel's chairwoman, and Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, its top Republican, said in a statement Tuesday.

Despite its insistence the NSA's authority should be preserved, the White House said Obama welcomes discussions with Americans and Congress about the proper balance between national security and privacy. But civil liberties advocates have said that sentiment is insufficient and hypocritical, pointing out that such a discussion would have been impossible if the programs hadn't been exposed by Snowden, who now faces felony charges.

Alexander made the Tuesday trip to ask lawmakers to reject the amendments at the request of the heads of the House Intelligence Committee, Rogers and Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger, D-Md. The two also warned in a statement that ending the program's authority would put the nation at risk of another terrorist attack.

Separately, seven Republican committee chairmen sent a letter to colleagues calling on them to oppose the Amash amendment. Meanwhile, House Republican leaders struggled to limit amendments on the overall bill, concerned about hampering national security and anti-terrorism efforts.

The defense spending bill would provide the Pentagon with $512.5 billion for weapons, personnel, aircraft and ships plus $85.8 billion for the war in Afghanistan for the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1.

The bill is $5.1 billion below current spending and has drawn a veto threat from the White House, which argues that it would force the administration to cut education, health research and other domestic programs to boost spending for the Pentagon.

In a leap of faith, the bill assumes that Congress and the administration will resolve the automatic, across-the-board spending cuts that have forced the Pentagon to furlough workers and cut back on training. The bill projects spending in the next fiscal year at $28.1 billion above the so-called sequester level.

Customer service: eight eloquent nuggets from Quora | Econsultancy

nugget

I?m always impressed just how much eloquence is there for the mining on Quora. I guess it makes sense, as?good answers are upvoted and people answer questions that rev their engines.

Suddenly, there?s a clarity to most threads that is addictive in its intense scrollability.?

So I searched for ?customer experience?, to see what I could find to report back with, and to shape a proto-strategy for a transforming business. Most of the interesting stuff I found can be seen more as comment on customer service, and specifically its social dimension.

Here goes?.

Your employees are people and your customers are people?

The best story to start. Greg Meyer found a job with a social CRM start-up through his enlightened answer on Quora.?

The question?

Is Twitter an effective customer service tool?

Here?s one of the best bits of Greg?s big ol? answer.

Your Employees are People and Your Customers Are People - Why Not Let Your Brand Reflect That?

There are lots of brands that are doing an outstanding job of sounding like people, not like, well, committees. Virgin America, Zappos, and Ford Motor Company are doing a great job in social media, and (surprise!) I also want to do business with them. Even better, when I communicate with these companies on closed, non-transparent channels, I feel like the same brand proposition and value still transmits in these other mediums. (Win!)

?

Customer service in 2013: making good, staff and chat

What's the biggest challenge for Customer Experience in 2013?

Jagan gives us surely the sharpest shot of clarity.

Errors do happen and when they happen, it's a golden opportunity for the businesses to respond faster and see that the overall experience is a breeze for the customer.

There have to be all rounders and people managers at all levels in the business. A customer support executive cannot bluntly say "That's not my work. Developers have to take care of that.", instead 'accountability' has to be increased at all levels.

One way to avoid bad customer experience is by being available at all times for the customers to reach businesses instantly by using live chat services likeclickdesk.com (disclosure: I work here). This has to happen even before the customer thinks of posting a -ve feedback on social networks or review sites. Be there first!

There is almost no precedent for good customer service

I?m being disingenuous with this heading, but it?s clear that forums are full of examples of terrible terrible customer service. For example, ?What?s the longest time that someone has been placed on hold??

Danielle offers, ?My parents were on hold with Continental for seven hours straight?.?

People like to discuss disaster, but the point remains that although customer service is really important for any business, previous blind spots have left service in some sectors characteristically poor. And so you?ve nothing to lose in changing your customer service processes and strategy.

?

Value proposition. What if service isn't enough?

If you work in a business that can?t necessarily beat competition into submission through customer service alone, well then your product and price takes centre stage. I?d suggest that fashion sits here.

As such?

Why do your customers buy from you?

Visakan offers a shower of eloquence on this one.

We aren't the cheapest around, and we aren't even the most reliable.

They buy from us because:

  1. We represent a narrative that they want to be a part of.
  2. We allow them to express their identity in a way that distinguishes them from the rest of the market.
  3. Slowly, we're building a community for them to be a part of.

This is interesting. The reliable comment aside, which brands can be seen to inhabit the same space? From the big brands, I?d suggest Nike.?Nike iD and FuelBand are two great examples of handing control over to the customer.

There are communities outside of official Nike, e.g. NikeTalk, which show that Nike is whupping other trainer brands with its culturing of brand identity.

?

Radical commitment to a customer's needs

Cafes and restaurants provide an interesting detour on Quora. Everybody likes talking about them. They?re the Edward Hopper-Wayne?s World-Soprano?s pillar of the American dream.

And perhaps they give insight?

How do caf?s/restaurants handle unwanted customers?

Peter gives us:

Business should be a desirable and beneficial exchange of goods/services between customers and an enterprise for the mutual benefit of both.

Recommend your 'unwanted' customer to your competitors

It's very important that you understand fully the value propositions of your competitors ?so that you can direct your 'unwanted' customer to the establishment where they have a better chance of being a welcomed customer.

Whilst directing unwanted custom away is hard, and potentially stupid (outside of the caf? environment, where Peter is talking about barring obnoxious punters, I believe), there?s a point here. You must understand fully the value propositions of your competitors. Only then will you recognise when such a time arrives as you are providing nothing unique in terms of service and product.

More nightmares stemming from inconsistency

Here?s a typical Quora thread, on crap service from Terravision, who wouldn?t sell a coach ticket at a window, but would sell the exact same ticket online. I can?t speak for the veracity of this entertaining story (veracity in the sense that this counts as a typical interaction ? it may not).?

But it highlights something I?ve noticed with the advent and maturation of digital. This inconsistency online and off-, with some companies.

An example would be electronics stores doing some offers that are online-only. How can the stores expect to shift any of these products?

The experience

I haven?t got much to say here, apart from the fact that this Quora post on ?What are some elements of a great unboxing experience?? is probably how I would sum up humanity and the internet.

On the serious side, unboxing is the perfect metaphor for how online customer experiences should work. Easy to use, clear and enticing product, all the other gubbins safely and neatly stored away, it looks good, too.

?

Netflix: virtuous cycle of subscriptions is better than selling ads?

A final note of interest here, with a nugget that is symptomatic of the good nuggety content on Quora, waiting to be un-earthed.

Who does Netflix consider their one customer, either subscribers or film publishers?

And well if the Director of Product, Netflix Website, doesn?t answer the question.

I think we're pretty clear that our subscribers are our customers. One of the advantages of a subscription business is that you are directly accountable to your consumers - they are paying us and as a result we seek to make them happy. Part of making them happy is acquiring great content, so we value our relationships with the content companies highly and do our best to satisfy them.

Our CEO has spoken publicly about how we want to provide a lot of economic value to our content partners. The virtuous cycle is: we delight our customers, they provide great word of mouth which attracts more subscribers, we then have more money to pay the studios and networks, we license more content and that makes our customers happier. ?

There's actually a lot less tension here than exists when you're in an advertising-supported business, since in that case your end users (customers) and the people who are paying the bills (advertisers) are two distinctly different groups.

I might check back with more nuggets from Quora. Let me know if you have thoughts on social customer experience and service.

Android 4.3 brings 1080p Netflix streaming

After revealing Google's new Nexus 7, Director of Product Management Hugo Barra revealed that the company has teamed up with Netflix to bring higher resolution video streams to compatible devices, a feature you'll only enjoy on devices running the just-announced Android 4.3. Yep, Netflix will now run at 1080p resolution, with the video-streaming company one of the first to use the new set of DRM APIs announced in tandem with this latest OS release. Unfortunately, of course, you'll just have to wait for that pesky OTA update before you can try it.
