Cancer Research Center Notes Doubled Cancer Rate Among Depo-Provera Users
A recently-released study links the birth control shot Depo-Provera (depo-medroxyprogesterone acetate) to a doubled risk of breast cancer in younger women. The study that was released by a team of doctors at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center found that among women ages 20-44, use of Depo-Provera for one year or longer more than doubled the risk of developing invasive breast cancer.?
Doctors at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center discovered that use of the Depo-Provera hormone shot increases breast cancer risks in younger women. If Depo-Provera was used in the last five years, and the woman used the drug for at least a year, the increased risk was more than twofold.
Doctor Says Hormone in Depo-Provera is Unhealthy for Women with Family History of Breast Cancer
Among nearly two thousand women in the survey, over half of participants had breast cancer, and those who had taken Depo Provera birth control shots had a 2.2-fold greater risk of breast cancer. A doctor who reviewed the study stated this demonstrates that hormones such as the progestin contained in Depo Provera ?are not healthy for the breast.? If a woman has a family history of breast cancer, they may be even at a greater risk using Depo Provera.
?
Several studies have linked the birth control shot Depo-Provera to breast cancer in women. Depo Provera contains a hormone that has been associated with postmenopausal cancer since 2002, but this study was the first time the drug was associated with cancer in younger women. Usually, women ages 20-44 have a greatly reduced risk of breast cancer compared to women over the age of 45. Studies in Kenya, New Zealand, Thailand, Mexico and Costa Rica have also linked the hormone used in Depo-Provera with higher rates of breast cancer.
PLEASE SPEAK WITH YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE DISCONTINUING USE OF DEPO-PROVERA OR ANY OTHER PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION.
