Britain sinks far deeper into recession than expected
LONDON (Reuters) - Economy shrank far more than expected in the second quarter of 2012, battered by everything from an extra day's holiday to budget austerity and the neighbouring euro zone crisis.
Chancellor George Osborne said the country had "deep-rooted economic problems".
The Office for National Statistics said Britain's gross domestic product fell 0.7 percent in the second quarter, the sharpest fall since early 2009 and a bigger drop than any of the economists surveyed in a Reuters poll last week had expected.
The figures confirmed that Britain is mired in its second recession since the financial crisis, with the economy shrinking for a third consecutive quarter.
It will add pressure on Osborne to get the economy growing again after a crisis that has left many Britons poorer as rising prices and higher taxes ate up meagre wage increases.
Sterling hit its lowest in nearly two weeks against the dollar after the data, and government bond prices rallied on speculation that the Bank of England may have to provide more economic stimulus than expected.
Earlier this month the Bank has announced another 50 billion pound programme of gilt purchases with newly created money to soften a grim economic outlook, but Wednesday's data is likely to add to market speculation that it may cut interest rates later this year.
"This is terrible data. Frankly there's nothing good that comes out of these numbers at all," said Peter Dixon, an economist at Commerzbank.
"The economy looks to be badly holed below the water line at this stage. It's a far worse period of activity than we'd expected."
HEADWINDS
Economists had been expecting an extra public holiday to mark Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee to reduce output by around 0.5 percent, so the latest figures suggest the economy is also contracting on an underlying basis.
The ONS said it was too early to provide an estimate of the Jubilee effect, but warned that this and very wet weather added "uncertainty" to its calculation of economic activity towards the end of the quarter.
Output in Britain's service sector -- which makes up more than three quarters of GDP -- contracted by 0.1 percent in the second quarter after growing 0.2 percent in Q1 2012.
Industrial output was 1.3 percent lower, while construction -- which accounts for less than 8 percent of GDP -- contracted by 5.2 percent, its biggest drop since the first quarter of 2009.
Overall second-quarter GDP was 0.8 percent lower than a year earlier, the biggest decline since the last three months of 2009.
Before Wednesday's data, most economists expected a return to growth in the third quarter, as the London Olympics offer a one-off boost through ticket sales and visitors spending.
And some argue that increasing employment levels suggest the economy is healthier than the headline GDP figures suggest.
But the overall outlook is poor. Last week the International Monetary Fund slashed its growth forecast for Britain by more than those for any other advanced economy, and warned the government and the Bank that they will need to rethink their approach if the economy fails to pick up by early next year.
AUSTERITY
Eliminating Britain's structural budget deficit over the next five years is the central political goal of Britain's coalition of Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, but the opposition Labour Party says the pace is too rapid.
Over the past month the coalition and the Bank have announced several measures to ease the flow of credit to households and businesses, as the euro zone debt crisis saps demand in Britain's major export markets.
But for now, any change to the fiscal austerity programme is opposed both by Chancellor George Osborne and Bank Governor Mervyn King, who fear it could trigger a loss of confidence in Britain's commitment to long-term deficit reduction.
"We're dealing with our debts at home and the debt crisis abroad. We've made progress over the last two years in cutting the deficit by 25 percent and businesses have created over 800,000 new jobs," Osborne said in a statement.
"But given what's happening in the world we need a relentless focus on the economy and recent announcements on infrastructure and lending show that's exactly what we're doing." (Reporting by David Milliken and Olesya Dmitracova)

Chongqing Iron and Steel Company is said to have defaulted on some of its debt in the past few years, totalling to some RMB3.6 billion, once again highlighting the difficulties steelmakers are facing amid slowing demand and over-capacity.
The company is said to have defaulted on loans and financing leases from HSBC, China Development Bank and CCB Financial Leasing Corp, totalling to RMB3.6 billion according to 21st Century Business Herald.? Of the RMB3.6 billion of loans, RMB887 million of which was a syndicated loans led by HSBC.? Curiously enough, the company has breached the debt covenant already, thus the company has technically defaulted on this loan.? Breaches in debt covenants have happened too with a long-term loan of RMB1.323 billion from the China Development Bank.? The report has not specified exactly which parts of the covenants in these two cases have been violated.? The company is said to be negotiating with banks regarding these obligations.
Meanwhile, a financing lease contract with CCB Financial Leasing has been breached in 2010 as the company?s debt/asset ratio reached 74.65% by the end of 2010.? The contract stated that debt/asset ratio should not be above 70%, thus the company has technically defaulted on this RMB1.4 billion obligation.? CCB subsequently relax the contract terms so as to avoid the termination of the leasing.
The debt situation, of course, did not improve from there as the economy slows more noticeably after the company has breached the contracts. Debt/asset ratio has risen further to 84.32% by the end of 2011 according to the report.
This is quite remarkable, especially if one considers that the Chinese economy only started to slow more significantly last year, while this particular steelmaker was already having difficulties in not breaching the debt covenants.? Individual company?s operation aside, we know that the steel industry has enormous over-capacity, and the matter is likely to be made worse as the economy slows.

In Haiti, anger over slum eviction plans
Plans to evict people from slums precariously situated on the vertiginous slopes around the Haitian capital are sparking protests from many who want to stay despite the dangers.
Port-au-Prince acts as a magnet in this desperately poor Caribbean nation, which was struck by a catastrophic 2010 earthquake that killed an estimated 225,000 people and displaced 1.5 million, one in six of the population.
Haitians flock to the capital from badly deforested and degraded rural areas in the hope of finding work to support their families.
But 80 percent of people in the capital live below the poverty line, many in squalid tent cities or in rickety housing near the edge of deadly ravines.
Some shantytowns are built on flood plains that risk being washed away when rainstorms come.
Many camps lack basic sanitation, leaving them more prone to infectious diseases like the cholera epidemic that has claimed more than 7,500 lives since sweeping the country in the wake of the quake.
For all these reasons, there have long been moves afoot to relocate slum dwellers to safer housing. When the quake hit and the international community turned its attention to Haiti's woes, those calls became a clamor.
But many slum dwellers don't want to leave. A lot of the housing alternatives being offered are outside the capital, which would mean less opportunity to find work.
"I was born here," 62-year-old William Jean told AFP as he sat on a bench facing his small dwelling in the optimistically named "Jalousie" or "Jealousy" neighborhood. "At the beginning, there were just a few houses."
In tents or makeshift abodes made out of sheeting, families eke out a miserable existence in the camps. When the flood waters pour in, mothers try to sleep standing up, cradling their babies.
"It's a delicate matter," Environment Minister Ronald St-Cyr told AFP, adding "something has to be done."
The government recently launched a program promoting the return of earthquake victims to their original neighborhoods, with a subsidy of around $500.
St-Cyr has proposed leveling 2,000 houses near the most dangerous ravines. In addition, all new buildings on such sites would be banned.
Many slum dwellers are livid at the plans and have taken to the streets of Port-au-Prince to protest, erecting flaming barricades and sometimes clashing with police.
"There's no danger in Jalousie," said a clearly angry Sylvestre Veus. "Over my dead body will they evict us."
Sylvestre Telfort works for an organization defending the rights of Jalousie residents and has called for a dialogue between residents and the government while encouraging those living in danger to move.
"Every socio-economic crisis has pushed people to come here, just like in the other ghettos of Port-au-Prince," Telfort told AFP.
Some 400,000 Haitians continue to live in tents, according to the International Organization for Migration.
"It's in the shantytowns that they come looking for voters, after that they forget them," said Jocelyn Louis, sitting on his bike. "I say no! No one can tear us away."
As those around him muttered their approval, he accused the Haitian government of reacting slowly to the crisis and not respecting "the constitution that guarantees housing for every son of this country."
Some residents pointed angrily to luxury homes nearby.
"They want to evict us but the owners of two- to three-level houses continue to enjoy their position," said a pregnant woman, pointing to large residences hidden behind high walls with barbed wire.
What will happen remains to be seen.
Michel Martelly, one of Haiti's best-known musicians with a colorful past as a Carnival singer, was elected president in 2011 promising to end the inequality and corruption and help the plight of the poor.
But despite billions of dollars of pledged international aid, progress has been painfully slow.

When you get to this stage you have two options:
1. Package and Hop ? This is where you package the system and processes that you?ve created, and that have worked so effectively in one industry, and then you take them into another industry.
Say you work with car dealerships. You take your system that you?ve created with all your clients in that industry, and then you enter a different industry, say restaurants, and then apply your systems there.
The common myth is that ?it might work for that industry, but it won?t work in ours!?
That?s as true as calling Bernie Madoff ?an angel? ? it just aint the case.
The reason why this DOES work is because most industries only apply the strategies and principles that everyone else in their industry applies.
When you bring in a different set of strategies, they often provide significant results because they stand out so much from what everyone else in the industry is doing.
It?s like trying to figure out a solution to a problem while sitting at your desk. You try, try some more. Bang your head on the table, but to no avail.
You then change up environments by going for a walk or hitting the gym ? and within minutes you have a solution to your problem.
2. Industry Specialization ? The other option is to put all your energy into one industry.
If you help dentists with their marketing and patient communications, you may choose to become known as the ?dentist marketing gal.?
This focus allows you to hone your skills in that area and really develop a name for yourself in that specific industry.
It doesn?t mean you should just do what everyone else in that industry does.
It means you develop a system of best practices (from many industries) and use them with your clients in that one industry to help them achieve significant results.
This option also allows you to target all of your marketing to one industry.
Whether you choose to package and hop or specialize in one industry, the key to success is developing a system that works.

Why do anti-hunger and anti-obesity initiatives always fall short?
ScienceDaily (July 23, 2012) ? With widespread hunger continuing to haunt developing nations, and obesity fast becoming a global epidemic, any number of efforts on the parts of governments, scientists, non-profit organizations and the business world have taken aim at these twin nutrition-related crises. But all of these efforts have failed to make a large dent in the problems, and now an unusual international collaboration of researchers is explaining why.
Publishing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers argue that while hunger and obesity are caused by a perfect storm of multiple factors acting in concert, the efforts to counter them have been narrowly focused and isolated. Overcoming the many barriers to achieving healthy nutrition worldwide, the researchers argue, will instead require an unprecedented level of joint planning and action between academia, government, civil society and industry.
In particular, the authors of the papers in the PNAS special feature propose an ambitious plan to remake the ways food is grown, processed, distributed, sold and consumed. The plan focuses on innovations that simultaneously take into account the needs of farmers, the complexity of nutrition-related human biology and decision-making, and the power of profit incentives in the commercial sector. The result, the researchers say, is "a roadmap for a transdisciplinary science to support change of sufficient scale and scope" to carve out "an alternative path from tradition to industrialization" -- one that "promotes healthy lifestyles and environments rather than undermining them."
Global food output has doubled in the past half-century, representing a nearly 20% increase in per-capita food supply, note the lead article's co-authors, Prof. Laurette Dub? of McGill University's Desautels Faculty of Management, Prabhu Pingali of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Prof. Patrick Webb of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. Yet the remarkable gains that flowed from the improvements in agriculture -- known as the Green Revolution -- have led to some new and unexpected health and nutrition problems, while leaving others unsolved.
Hunger and malnutrition continue to plague the world's poorest populations. At the same time, an obesity epidemic is fueling diabetes, cardiovascular ailments and other chronic diseases in developed and developing countries alike, straining healthcare systems and public finances.
How can 21st Century society do a better job of translating the benefits of agricultural and industrial growth into improved nutrition? That is the core question addressed by the researchers.
With the transition from traditional lifestyles and subsistence agriculture to a Western-type diet and lifestyle now occurring within a few decades in many parts of the world, new approaches are needed to alleviate hunger and prevent rising obesity and non-communicable diseases from undercutting these countries' fragile health systems, the researchers conclude.
Among the paths explored in the papers are promoting fuller integration of small farmers into national and global value chains and health systems; fostering collaboration among business, civil society and public organizations; and applying computer technology and systems-science models to make new streams of critical demographic, consumer and health data readily available to networks of policy makers, producers and market entrepreneurs.
The authors also stress the importance of harnessing the profit motive of the private market in order to unleash product and marketing innovation that is focused on the need to change the way people eat. "Business innovation as a catalyst for change is a key to full and sustainable nutrition security," says Prof. Dub?.
Taken together, the papers in the PNAS feature represent a significant contribution to the growing debate over the obesity epidemic, the globalization of food markets, and the role of food companies in addressing health and nutrition problems.
The PNAS special feature grew out of a 2008 conference hosted by the McGill World Platform for Health and Economic Convergence (MWP) with support from The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The MWP has been researching these problems for almost a decade.
The MWP recently co-hosted, with INCLEN Trust International, a major workshop in Delhi, India. The meeting brought together researchers, senior government policy makers, and top executives from major multinationals to discuss innovative projects with the potential to help curb hunger and improve nutrition and health around the world. The most promising of those projects will be further developed at an MWP gathering at the Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio Center in Italy in late November.

No matter what you are interested in, you will find a job to fit your interests. To get a job in the field of animal ecology you will need at least a bachelor's degree in either arts or science. For some jobs, you may also need more education like a master's degree or a doctor of philosophy. You can also use your animal ecology career to complement other fields like zoology, biology, anthropology and sociology.
Many people who study animal ecology teach others seeking the same degrees. You may need a Ph.D. to teach in this field but a few schools let you teach with just a master's degree. If you are interested in teaching high school students, you probably just need a bachelor's degree. There is a lot of demand for teachers in the field of animal ecology because people getting degrees in other areas like veterinary medicine, animal science and animal conservation need to take classes in animal ecology.
If you do not want to teach, you could consider working directly with animals by working as a veterinary assistant. You could also look for a job at your local zoo where you could help take care of the animals. For most careers in animal ecology, you need to get certification from one of the many animal ecology organizations. Cargill Beef recalls 30,000 pounds of ground beef
SCARBOROUGH, Maine (AP) ? Hannaford Supermarkets is alerting consumers that Cargill Beef is voluntarily recalling 29,339 pounds of ground beef that may contain salmonella.
The 85-percent-lean ground beef was produced at Cargill's plant in Wyalusing, Pa., on May 25, and repackaged for sale to consumers by customers of the Kansas-based company.
Cargill President John Keating says in a statement, "Food borne illnesses are unfortunate and we are sorry for anyone who became sick from eating ground beef we may have produced."
Hannaford's says consumers should check their ground beef for "use or sell by" dates between May 29 and June 16. Refunds will be offered for ground beef with those dates that is returned.

As I sat down to write this blog, I wasn?t completely clear about my opinion on gay marriage, not because of my own feelings about homosexual love, but because I wasn?t sure what ?marriage? truly means. I know how I define marriage. And I?ve heard others define it. But, at the end of the day, none of us is the ultimate source. The dictionary is.

Years ago, when I worked at Howard University, the school gave former student Sean Combs (formerly known as Puff Daddy, and currently known as Diddy) an Alumni Achievement Award. Many people opposed this decision. Combs never graduated from the university, so they believed that the administration changed the rules because of Combs? wealth and fame. Even as an employee, I didn?t understand the rationale ? until I looked up the word ?alumnus.? I thought it was synonymous with ?graduate.? But it actually means a graduate or former student of a specific school. So, Combs was, in fact, a Howard University alumnus.
Years later, I heard an individual describe to a judge a series of circumstances that were perceived as stalking. After listening to the account of the incident, the judge opened a dictionary, looked up ?stalking,? read the entry aloud to the courtroom, said the situation didn?t fit the definition, and dismissed the case. You see, the dictionary is relevant to the law. Laws are, after all, a bunch of words, so the definitions of those words are of the utmost importance.
?Marriage? is also a word ? one that people often define differently, based on their religious beliefs, upbringing, culture, personality, experiences, etc. It?s also a word about which people can get quite passionate. Those who oppose gay marriage are often quick to define it, insisting it means a ?holy union between a man and a woman.?
Not being one to take someone else?s word for it, I logged onto dictionary.com and looked it up for myself. Marriage is defined as ? drum roll, please ? ?the social institution under which?a man and woman establish their decision?to live as husband and wife by legal commitments, religious ceremonies, etc.? But wait, there?s a second definition: ?A similar institution involving partners of the same gender.?
It occurred to me that dictionary.com might have amended their definition in response to the current dialogue and laws pertaining to gay marriage. Wondering what the older, more established definition of marriage might be, I picked up The American Heritage Dictionary (Third Edition ? published in 1994).
Printed dictionaries can be harder to amend as a result of social or legal pressure and changes. The definition: ?A legal union of a man and a woman as husband and wife? or ?a close union.?
In my humble opinion, individuals ? and religious institutions, for that matter ? can define marriage however they see fit. But the law, like the dictionary, is supposedly objective, and represents people with different viewpoints. The words that comprise our laws are not cross-referenced with holy texts or public opinion, but with the dictionary. And the dictionary says that two people can be considered married if they have a close union. I guess my opinion has been formed. ?People? can certainly include two men or two women.
Even if marriage was strictly defined as a relationship between a man and a woman, I would like to see same-sex couples have the same rights and benefits as heterosexual couples. And I am not sure how them having anything less would help or hinder me.
A Powerful Person accepts other people. I am certainly willing to accept people and their sexual preferences. Their sex lives and romantic partnerships are their business, just like what happens in my bedroom is mine. And if you have a beef with gay marriage, your issue may not be with the legislators, or even gay individuals. It might be with the dictionary publisher.

Analysis: Favoring the French, a lesson in perception from bonds
LONDON (Reuters) - One indebted country has pushed through unprecedented austerity measures and persuaded Europe to shore up its banks. The other has done very little and is about to roll back even some of that.
Which one is paying near zero percent on its debt?
Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy must be wondering what he needs to do to get his country's borrowing costs down from levels that, over time, will bankrupt it.
Just to the north, French President Francois Hollande, whose country is financially in only slightly better shape, could be forgiven for thinking financial markets were mistaking France for Germany.
No matter what policy steps euro zone countries are taking -individually or as a whole - the gap between the economies in the north and those in the south are growing wider, the opposite of what European leaders are trying to achieve.
"Investors are drawing a dividing line along the Alps and the Pyrenees," Rabobank rate strategist Richard McGuire said about the paradox of two debtors being treated as if they belonged to different worlds.
With 10-year borrowing costs of around 7 percent, Spain may soon be forced out of capital markets. France, on the other hand, looks like one of the world's safest debt markets with its debt costs some 500 basis points lower.
On Thursday, investors even got to the point of paying what amounts to a parking fee -- a negative yield -- on short-term French debt.
This contrasts with the picture in November last year when France was seen as the next weakest link in the euro zone after Spain and Italy and the spread, or difference, between French and Spanish 10-year yields was about half what it is now.
There are a multitude of reasons for this unequal treatment on bond markets -- France's slightly stronger economy, its history of being close to Germany politically, and recent moves by the European Central Bank.
But for the moment and perhaps unwarranted, France is basking in the euro zone's core and Spain is being hung out to dry.
DISTORTED FLOWS
There is an awkward feeling about the flows into French bonds, though. Investors' view that France is the weakest of the so-called "core" group of the euro zone has not changed.
France has plenty of things to put investors off. A stubbornly high budget deficit, a flagging economy, still strong financial ties with Italy and Spain and inflexible labor markets are only a few.
While Hollande has managed to keep this year's budget deficit target of 4.5 percent of economic output on track by raising taxes on the rich, he is yet to deliver the deep structural reforms that markets were pushing for in November.
While most countries in the euro zone are lifting the retirement age, he has cut it. But he still needs to find a massive 33 billion euros worth of savings for next year.
That none of this is weighing much on French bonds is mainly because investors are being driven to find yield, or return for their money, wherever they can.
Germany -- the bloc's last domino -- has little room to accommodate more money in its debt markets, so many investors are simply forced to ignore France's shortcomings and boldly expand the area where they choose to deploy their cash.
"France is not doing great in terms of budget deficit progress and other reforms but you need at least some yield and German paper is not going to do the trick," Commerzbank rate strategist David Schnautz said.
"Buying France is the lesser of two evils."
A key factor has also been the European Central Bank's unconventional policy.
First, the injection of almost 1 trillion euros in three-year loans into the euro banking system renewed demand for Italian and Spanish bonds from their domestic banking sectors in the first part of this year.
While banks in Spain and Italy bought more risky debt from their shaken sovereigns, French banks were among those selling it to them, boosting the health of their balance sheets.
Also, two weeks ago, the ECB cut the rate it charges banks for depositing cash with it overnight to zero, doing little to quell underlying concerns about Spain, but effectively taking out what was previously seen as a floor for bond yields and other euro zone interest rates.
As well as Thursday's French bills, yields on short-dated bills issued by the bloc's safest economies - Germany, the Netherlands and Finland - have recently turned negative.
So, in a hunting for yield, many are now buying French bonds, which are perceived as riskier, but at least offer a bit higher returns.
Ten-year French yields trade at record lows just above 2 percent, some 80 basis points over their equivalent in Germany.
"It feels different compared to the end of last year when we saw clients excluding France from their benchmarks," said Kommer von Trigt, a bond fund manager at Robeco, a firm managing assets worth 177 billion euros.
"There is a new catalyst now, which is the ECB."
EN-CORE
At the other end of the spectrum, investor perception that the euro zone's southern periphery is at least potentially in danger of breaking off, is hammering Spain.
"Euro zone without France is something that people really have to struggle with," Commerzbank's Schnautz said. "You can imagine a lot of things but there's basically a point where imagination turns into fantasy."
Despite this, some investors say the French bond rally is a distortion caused by the ECB's loose monetary condition which could prove to be transitory if the euro zone debt crisis advances further.
Rabbani Wahhab, senior fixed income portfolio manager at London and Capital, a $3.2 billion fund, "deliberately" stays away from France and the peripheral markets.
"Our fear for the French bonds is that they will be once again caught in the crossfire when ... things blow out again in the periphery," Wahhab said.

Insurance is determined by the level of coverage you want or need, not by how much you drive. You can get the most basic, liability, which is also the cheapest.
As far as vehicle sharing, every person who will be driving the car needs to have insurance.

Smoky Tomato, Roasted Red Pepper & Arugula Pasta
I don?t know about you, but I am swimming in some tomato love over here!? We have truly loved getting to share some great tomato recipes but the real reason behind this recipe exchange is awareness.? Ali and I feel passionate about a campaign being sponsored by the International Justice Mission (IJM) that is helping to bring awareness to consumers about tomatoes.? 90% of our country?s off-season tomatoes are farmed in Florida which has been recently called ?ground zero? for modern-day slavery.? It?s heartbreaking to learn that this is happening right here, to our neighbors, but even more so that so many of us have no idea that it?s happening.
So IJM, along with many others, has been working tirelessly to bring awareness to this issue.? Thousands have been freed from slavery and tomato farmers have developed zero-tolerance programs for slavery, child labor, etc.? They fight for fair wages and safe working conditions.? Fast food companies and many grocery stores are already on board with this Fair Food program.

So why not celebrate with some more #TomatoLove?? I made a quick tomato and roasted red pepper pasta in a spicy, smoky sauce.? I am a little bit obsessed with smoked paprika these days and it becomes the star flavor in this dish.? It?s quick, healthy and I love the fresh flavors!

Smoky Tomato, Roasted Red Pepper & Arugula Pasta
Yield: 2 Servings
Total Time: 20 minutes
Fresh veggies and pasta with smoky seasonings and fresh mozzarella.
Ingredients:
8 ounces pasta
2 tsp. olive oil, divided
1 shallot, minced
1 clove garlic, minced
1 cup grape tomatoes, halved
1/2 cup roasted red peppers, chopped
1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped, divided
1 tsp. smoked paprika
1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper
2 cups fresh arugula
2 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese, diced
1/4 cup Parmesan cheeseDirections:
Cook pasta according to package directions, reserving 1/4 cup of the pasta cooking water.
While the pasta cooks, heat 1 teaspoon of olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the shallot and garlic and cook until soft and fragrant, about 6 minutes. Add the tomatoes, roasted red peppers, half of the basil, smoked paprika, crushed red pepper flakes, salt and pepper and stir to combine. Let the mixture cook for another 5-6 minutes until the tomatoes begin to soften.
Add the arugula to the pan and drizzle the remaining 1 teaspoon olive oil over the arugula. Stir it to combine and cook until the arugula wilts. Turn the heat to low and stir in the mozzarella cheese. Add the cooked pasta and the pasta water and stir until combined. Top with Parmesan cheese.
