McElroy leads Jets to TD in 28-10 to Eagles

(AP) ? If Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow don't get it done in the red zone, the New York Jets can turn to Greg McElroy.

After all, he was the only quarterback to lead the Jets to a touchdown this preseason.

"That was obviously a point of emphasis for us, was just red-area execution, and we were able to do it for at least that one drive," McElroy said following a 28-10 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night.

The Jets (0-4) were the first team in 35 years to go three preseason games without a touchdown, matching the 1977 Atlanta Falcons for offensive futility.

McElroy ended that drought. His reward will be a seat on the bench.

"I'm glad we got it," Jets coach Rex Ryan said. "I'm not going to sit here and say I wish we (hadn't scored). I would've liked to have saved it and tack it on next week."

The Jets open against Buffalo on Sept. 9. The Eagles will play at Cleveland.

Sanchez, Tebow and most of the Jets starters didn't play in this battle between backups and guys fighting for roster spots.

Michael Vick and all of Philadelphia's starters watched from the sideline.

Trent Edwards threw for 197 yards and two TDs to help the Eagles (4-0) finish the preseason undefeated for the first time since 1995.

None of that will matter when the games count.

Hours before kickoff, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie stopped just short of issuing a win-or-else ultimatum to coach Andy Reid.

Lurie said the team must make a "substantial improvement" for Reid to return for his 15th season next year. He added another 8-8 record would be "unacceptable."

"I don't have a level or anything like that," Lurie said. "I want to be clear about that. You try to make the best judgment you can after the season."

Reid's contract runs through 2013.

"I don't care about that stuff," Reid said. "He has high expectations. I have high expectations. Let's go play. We surely won't be satisfied with 8-8. We're striving for better than that. I'm not worried about it. I understand the business. I have a great relationship with Jeffrey."

The Jets hadn't scored a TD in the 13 quarters before McElroy tossed a 6-yard TD pass to Terrance Ganaway midway through the second. Sanchez and Tebow failed to do that in 35 possessions.

McElroy finished 12 of 17 for 90 yards and one TD. He also rushed for 33 yards.

"Obviously we went out there with the intention and the hope to score some touchdowns, so we were able to get one," McElroy said. "The execution was great. I told the guys when we were out on the field, I said: 'Hey, let's just make the most of this opportunity, you don't get down here very often, let's not take it for granted, let's punch it in.'"

A seventh-round draft pick out of Alabama last year, McElroy spent his rookie season on injured reserve after dislocating his right thumb while playing against Philadelphia last preseason.

Sanchez was 24 of 35 (68.6 percent) for 203 yards with two interceptions and six sacks. Tebow completed 36.1 percent (13 for 36) of his passes for 151 yards with two interceptions and seven sacks.

Despite Tebowmania, there's no controversy in New York. Sanchez is the clear-cut starter, but the way the Jets use Tebow will be intensely scrutinized.

Eagles rookie QB Nick Foles, who all but officially won the backup job with three impressive performances, was 4 of 6 for 46 yards before giving way to Edwards.

On Edwards' first drive, Bryce Brown ran in from the 2 to tie it at 7.

Edwards threw a 31-yard TD pass to Mardy Gilyard late in the second quarter to give the Eagles a 14-7 lead.

Nick Folk kicked a 58-yard field goal as the first half expired to cut it to 14-10.

Edwards connected with Brett Brackett on a 7-yard TD pass in the fourth. Chris Polk's 3-yard TD run made it 28-10.

Edwards, a veteran and former starter in Buffalo, is competing for a roster spot with Mike Kafka, who began training camp as the backup to Vick.

He'll surely land a home if he gets cut.

"I want to be here," Edwards said. "This is the team I want to play for. I feel I can help these guys."

NOTES: The Eagles beat the Jets 45-19 last December. Philadelphia entered that game at 5-8 while New York was 8-5. ... Jets DE Quinton Coples had a sack in each preseason game and finished with 4?. ... Newly acquired RT Jason Smith entered the game for the Jets in the second quarter. Smith, the No. 2 overall pick in 2009, was acquired from St. Louis to back up Austin Howard. ... Eagles rookie DE Vinny Curry had two sacks.

Firefox 16 beta arrives with web app hooks, Reader Mode for Android and VoiceOver for Macs

Mozilla Marketplace

Firefox 15 is barely fresh off the vine, and we're already looking at a beta version 16 for both desktop platforms and Android. Mozilla's test release builds in the first support for web apps that play nicely with the Mozilla Marketplace; as long as titles have a slight amount of extra formatting, they can slot into Firefox without hiccups. More treats exist if you're running certain platforms: the Android crowd receives a Safari-style Reader Mode that strips out the fluff from pages, while Mac users see the once test-only VoiceOver support flipped on by default to improve accessibility. Even developers get a little something special through a quick-access toolbar and more readily accessible CSS4 scripting. If any of this sounds tempting, there's a pair of source links waiting for your attention.

Having An Accountant For your Business Can Be Effective & Boost ...

If you are like thousands of similar small businesses across the UK, then you will most likely be considering whether or not to consolidate your organisation or look to expand in in the current economic climate. If your revenue has been hit by diminished consumer spending, then your first inclination is most likely to involve incurring cost cutting techniques and the expulsion of any non-essential items of expenditure. This may be a flawed way of thinking, however, especially should the economy begin to experience an upward curve within the next 12 months or so.

How an Accountant Can Boost the Performance of your Business

Hiring an accountant is the type of decision that an overly cautious firm may avoid making in the current climate, but is also one that can deliver exceptional results on behalf of your business. Consider the following: -

  • Streamlining Roles within your Business: As a business leader, you must strive to remain focused on thinking strategically to fulfil your commercial vision. When you are bogged down with managing accounts and finances, you are minimising productivity in areas where you can have a significant influence. Employing an accountant can negate this, however, and help to develop more streamlined and well defined roles within your company.
  • Creating an Empowered and Busy Workforce: The role of an accountant is primarily to manage finances, but they can also provide an overview of your firm?s budget and areas in which you are overspending. This is especially useful in terms of cultivating an empowered and motivated work force, as you can assess the exact amount of employees required to handle your businesses workload and eliminate unnecessary salary costs.
  • Maximise Your Financial Performance: The financial performance of your business is pivotal to it?s success or failure, and only by maximising it can you lay the foundations for long term prosperity. The employment of an accountant can assist you in achieving this, and regardless of the salary expectations that they have their presence more than repays this over time. With the ability to maximise profitability be regulating income and expenditure, qualified accountants can deliver outstanding results on behalf of your firm.

The Bottom Line

When you hire an accountant, you are not simply adding another name to your wage bill. Instead, you making an investment in your businesses financial future, and equipping it with the necessary tools to remain solvent in a struggling economy.

Twitter appeals ruling on protester tweets

    4 hrs.

Twitter is appealing a judge's ruling to hand over to prosecutors the tweets and account information of an?Occupy Wall Street protester.

The protester,?Malcolm Harris, is?being tried for disorderly conduct in connection with the?Occupy Wall Street march on the Brooklyn Bridge last fall. Authorities are trying?to use Twitter?posts made by Harris between September and December 2011?to prosecute him.

Harris has also filed a civil proceeding to block Criminal Court Judge Matthew Sciarrino's ruling that the information be turned over to the Manhattan district attorney's office.

In its?filing?Monday, Twitter asks the court to reverse the judge's order that it turn over the information. In part, Twitter said:

Did the trial court err in ruling that over 3 months of Defendant?s Tweets are unprotected by either the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution or art. I, ? 12of the New York Constitution when the U.S. Supreme Court and New York Court of Appeals have respectively held that the government must obtain a search warrant in order to gather data about a suspect?s public movements for periods of 28 and 65 days? Yes.

The American Civil Liberties Union plans to file a brief in support of Twitter.

In a blog posting ACLU attorney Aden Fine wrote that "the information demanded by the DA includes not only the contents of Harris?s tweets, but his private subscriber information ? including the IP addresses he used to access Twitter over three-plus months, which can reveal his physical location throughout that entire period."?

The D.A.'s office "also asked for the date, time, and duration of each of his Twitter sessions. By denying Twitter?s and Harris?s challenge, the court held that the government can access this wealth of sensitive personal information without satisfying basic constitutional protections. That isn't right."

So far, the?Manhattan D.A.'s?Office has declined to comment on the appeal.

Find The Stock Marketing Overwhelming? Don?t Fret; Read On

Posted on August 29, 2012 by William Tan in The Smart Investor

Learning how to invest in the stock market wisely can be a great way to enhance your income. It can be quite shocking to realize the investment potential associated with it. However, in order to make the most money from stock investing, you must be knowledgeable about it, if you want to be successful. Keep reading to learn the essentials for success in the stock market.

It?s crucial to re-evaluate your investment decisions and portfolio frequently, every three months or so. The economy never stays the same for long. Particular sectors will start to do better than the others, and certain businesses could turn obsolete. Certain financial instruments will make better investments than others. It is therefore important to keep track of your portfolio, and make adjustments as needed.

If you like to get involved in a lot of trades, you need to ensure that you always have access to your trading account, even if the internet line or your computer breaks down. When you use an online trading company, you can usually order a trade via fax or a phone call. However, when you phone or fax in a trade, you may be liable for additional fees.

Before you buy any stock, be sure to take note of the average volume it sees in trading every day. This is as important as considering the selling commission as you begin your investing foray with the purchase of stocks. If you buy a stock that has low volume, then your stock will not trade very frequently. Sometimes it is very hard to sell stock from those companies.

    Full Service

If you would like to have comfort with full service brokers and also make picks yourself, then you should work with brokers who can provide you online and full service options. Working with such a broker lets you split your total investment into whatever proportion you like, handle part of it yourself, and turn the rest over to your broker. You will have control as well as professional assistance.

Finding a strategy that is effective for you and dedicating yourself to it is pretty important if you intend to invest in stocks successfully. You can make your choice from companies in markets that show high profits, or choose ones that are well positioned with cash. Each person has their own unique investing strategy, and it is critical that you do your own research and stick with what works for you.

Carefully watch trade volume. Trading volume indicates investor interest in the stock and the number of people who are buying and selling it. The activity of a stock can show volatility or stability, which could determine whether or not you want to buy it.

While you may decide to conduct your investments on your own, consider checking in with a professional adviser on occasion to gather alternative opinions on approaches to use. A reliable advisor will offer more information than just a few hot stock tips. They can help you figure out your goals, your tolerance for risk, and other important information. The pair of you can work to assemble a customized investment strategy based on your unique needs and characteristics.

Keep in mind that stocks are more than pieces of paper used for trading purposes. When you own stocks, you may also get voting rights and other benefits. You are granted a rite to earnings and a claim on assets by virtue of owning a company?s stock. You can often make your voice heard by voting in elections for the company leadership.

As this article stated, you can make a very good income by investing in stocks. Yet you can only gain true profits with investing by being truly knowledgeable in the subject, you can?t expect to strike dumb luck with each of your investments. Once you take this information and put it to use, you?ll be ready to succeed!

Follow your own intuition first. Though it makes sense to listen to guidance in other realms of life, it is often unwise to do so when investing in the stock market. Listen to your gut when making investment decisions. Your own intuition is likely best when it comes to investing in the stock market.

Business insurance Wisconsin ? Compensation cases involving obese

Business insurance Wisconsin insurers have come across an important piece of information that could be of crucial relevance for employers regarding insurance costs in their business.

On a court decision that shocked workers compensation experts, a New Jersey appellate court ruled that James Renner is entitled to workers compensation survivor benefits, after his wife, Kathleen, died of a blood clot after sitting at her work computer for long hours.

Kathleen Renner, an obese AT&T Inc. manager, worked from home and ?worked all hours of the day and night? to meet deadlines imposed by her employer, court records state.

A medical expert for Mr. Renner said that sitting for an extended period probably led to the formation of blood clots and contributed to Ms Renner?s death, acknowledging other important risk factors, such as her obesity.

Indeed, obesity figures are dramatically increasing in the United States. ?Approximately a third of American adults are currently obese, and it is the leading cause of preventable deaths in the world.

Meanwhile, a medical expert for the defense said that the combination of risk factors contributed to her pulmonary embolism, but he also admitted that it would have been less likely for her to suffer from an embolism had she not worked that day, according to court records.

As business insurance Wisconsin agents found out, after AT&T appealed the court decision, the Superior Court of New Jersey Appellate Division said it had to determine whether the woman?s lack of movement at work ?was more severe than her lack of movement in her daily living, and whether the inactivity at work caused her pulmonary embolism in a material way?.

The court ruled there was sufficient evidence to support the finding that prolonged inactivity while working caused the pulmonary embolism by a material degree, but the ruling left business insurance Wisconsin agents interested in the case questioning whether the claim would have arisen if not for the obesity factor.

Courts and workers compensation boards in other states have similarly found in some cases that employers and insurers are responsible for addressing injured workers? weight conditions when doing so is vital for the treatment of their workplace injuries to succeed.

So is the case of Edward G. Sprague, who suffered a work-related knee injury in 1976, and over 25 years later the knee had deteriorated when he suffered another work accident.

Mr. Sprague, who weighed 350 lbs when he suffered the last accident in 2001, had to undergo knee surgery, but doctors concluded his obesity needed treatment in order for his knee surgery to succeed.

SAIF, the insurer, opposed paying for a bypass surgery, claiming it should not compensate it because the claimant had not proved his morbid obesity was caused by his compensable knee injury.

Still, in a move expected by business insurance Wisconsin insurers, the Supreme Court disagreed, stating that the bypass surgery was related to the claimant?s knee condition, which was caused in part by the 1976 injury.

In the case of Oregon, where the case happened, ?the statute does not limit the compensability of medical services simply because those services provide incidental benefits or help to treat other medical conditions that were not caused by the compensable injury?, the court said.

The next game from the Dead Island developers is Project Hell ...

    Guardian1

Dead Island is a game, that despite being riddled with a few bugs and glitches, that I enjoyed, because it was a step in the right direction. It wasn?t game of the year material, but it was pretty solid overall, and a blast to play with friends. It?s developer, Techland, is moving on though, as they?ve dedicated a second team to start work on a new game, codenamed: Project Hell.

According to a debut blog post, Project Hell came about from a weapons mod that a Techland teamster built for Dead Island, and that it will be a ?FPP hack and slash game in a dark fantasy setting?. ?We won?t be asking for your money on Kickstarter,? designer and project manager Marcin Kruczkiewicz said.

Our main goal is to make a game we can all enjoy playing so don?t expect unicorns and fairies ? we prefer breaking through hordes of undead minions only to slaughter their devilish and loathsome masters in a bloody boss-fight. To achieve that we?ll use our experience already gained in game development and enhanced technology from Dead Island.

It?s still early days right now, with no release date or platform information available yet. There?s some concept art, that you can see below, but if Project Hell manages to make sword and sorcery as fun as Dead Island is in co-op, then I?m all too eager to give this title a go.

Building blocks of life found around young star

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? A team of astronomers using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) has spotted sugar molecules in the gas surrounding a young Sun-like star. This is the first time sugar been found in space around such a star, and the discovery shows that the building blocks of life are in the right place, at the right time, to be included in planets forming around the star.

The astronomers found molecules of glycolaldehyde -- a simple form of sugar [1] -- in the gas surrounding a young binary star, with similar mass to the Sun, called IRAS 16293-2422. Glycolaldehyde has been seen in interstellar space before [2], but this is the first time it has been found so near to a Sun-like star, at distances comparable to the distance of Uranus from the Sun in the Solar System. This discovery shows that some of the chemical compounds needed for life existed in this system at the time of planet formation [3].

"In the disc of gas and dust surrounding this newly formed star, we found glycolaldehyde, which is a simple form of sugar, not much different to the sugar we put in coffee," explains Jes J?rgensen (Niels Bohr Institute, Denmark), the lead author of the paper. "This molecule is one of the ingredients in the formation of RNA, which -- like DNA, to which it is related -- is one of the building blocks of life."

The high sensitivity of ALMA -- even at the technically challenging shortest wavelengths at which it operates -- was critical for these observations, which were made with a partial array of antennas during the observatory's Science Verification phase [4].

"What it is really exciting about our findings is that the ALMA observations reveal that the sugar molecules are falling in towards one of the stars of the system," says team member Cecile Favre (Aarhus University, Denmark). "The sugar molecules are not only in the right place to find their way onto a planet, but they are also going in the right direction."

The gas and dust clouds that collapse to form new stars are extremely cold [5] and many gases solidify as ice on the particles of dust where they then bond together and form more complex molecules. But once a star has been formed in the middle of a rotating cloud of gas and dust, it heats the inner parts of the cloud to around room temperature, evaporating the chemically complex molecules, and forming gases that emit their characteristic radiation as radio waves that can be mapped using powerful radio telescopes such as ALMA.

IRAS 16293-2422 is located around 400 light-years away, comparatively close to Earth, which makes it an excellent target for astronomers studying the molecules and chemistry around young stars. By harnessing the power of a new generation of telescopes such as ALMA, astronomers now have the opportunity to study fine details within the gas and dust clouds that are forming planetary systems.

"A big question is: how complex can these molecules become before they are incorporated into new planets? This could tell us something about how life might arise elsewhere, and ALMA observations are going to be vital to unravel this mystery," concludes Jes J?rgensen.

The work is described in a paper to appear in the journal Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), an international astronomy facility, is a partnership of Europe, North America and East Asia in cooperation with the Republic of Chile. ALMA is funded in Europe by the European Southern Observatory (ESO), in North America by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) in cooperation with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) and the National Science Council of Taiwan (NSC) and in East Asia by the National Institutes of Natural Sciences (NINS) of Japan in cooperation with the Academia Sinica (AS) in Taiwan. ALMA construction and operations are led on behalf of Europe by ESO, on behalf of North America by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), which is managed by Associated Universities, Inc. (AUI) and on behalf of East Asia by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ). The Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO) provides the unified leadership and management of the construction, commissioning and operation of ALMA.

    Notes

[1] Sugar is the common name for a range of small carbohydrates (molecules containing carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, typically with a hydrogen:oxygen atomic ratio of 2:1, as in water). Glycolaldehyde has the chemical formula C2H4O2. The sugar commonly used in food and drink is sucrose, which is a larger molecule than glycolaldehyde, and another example of this set of compounds.

[2] Glycolaldehyde has been detected in two places in space so far -- first towards the Galactic Centre cloud Sgr B2, [using the National Science Foundation's (NSF) 12 Meter Telescope at Kitt Peak (USA) in 2000][1], and [with the NSF's Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (also USA) in 2004][2], and in the high-mass hot molecular core G31.41+0.31 [using the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (France) in 2008][3].

[3] Accurate laboratory measurements of the characteristic wavelengths of radio waves emitted by glycolaldehyde were critical for the team's identification of the molecule in space. In addition to the glycolaldehyde, IRAS 16293-2422 is also known to harbour a number of other complex organic molecules, including ethylene glycol, methyl formate and ethanol.

[4] Early scientific observations with a partial array of antennas began in 2011 (see[ eso1137][4]). Both before and after this, a range of Science Verification observations have been performed to demonstrate that ALMA is capable of producing data of the required quality, and the data produced have been made publicly available. The results described here use some of these Science Verification data. Construction of ALMA will be completed in 2013, when 66 high-precision antennas will be fully operational.

[5] They are usually around 10 degrees above absolute zero: about -263 degrees Celsius.
